And here's me thinking you're neglecting me :-P Congrats on the new job, and don't be pointing out ugly children, they may turn into beautiful swans one day.
Hehe - you know, you're right! Thing is, to their mum and dad they *are* the most gorgeous kids on earth.
One thing I'm delighting in in Oz is being able to "coo" at random kids in prams on the street without their parents thinking I'm a paedo as seems to be the case back home. I like kids - they rock. I just don't have any of my own yet so I like to get all mushy over other people's. Ugly or otherwise 
It's certainly not just you - I find most children rather unpleasant to look at, in photographs or live. I don't have any small relatives, so perhaps that's driving my broad generalization. Or perhaps it's my realization that cuteness is an evolutionary weapon - crying little poop-factories would get left out for the wolves were they not tapping in to some neural hard-wiring.

No, no, no MY nephew is the cutest of them all! While visiting an eating establishment a man came up and gave my nephew 50 p just for being cute. Luckily that was before my nephew threw up his dinner.
LOL - I've fortunately been blessed with friends (and now my sis) who have had wonderfully cute kids. But some of the offspring that you see in the shopping centres have only mugs that their mothers love!
Well, this proves something: never ever believe in compliments, people are just not brave enought to state the ugly truth. Not me. I´ve told people:"She`ll grow out of it." This way the parent will start saving money for the plastic surgery sooner.
