Those joints don't have great service because the pay sucks and most the employees have to bust their asses at two jobs to afford the rat's nest apartment in the grimy part of town... basically life sucks for them. If I lived like that, I would be hard pressed to be polite to anyone.
For a non-technicanl job, without a degree, and usually before getting out of high school / or just out of high school - the job pay is equal to experience.

Example is updated as of 12/22/07 for McDonalds.
Under 18 = $6.35 / hr
18-25 yrs old = $7.66 / hr
25-44 yrs old = $9.02 / hr
This is above minimum wage, which is the wage for those with no experience.
You get paid to do a job, if you can't do the job, then I am sure they can fill the job with someone who will work / have a better attitude.
