If it's any consolation, my regular car maintenance ($500) grew to $900 when they discovered that my drive belts were made of cardboard, or something, and my rear brake pads were thinner than a politician's excuse.

This does not include the $1200 I had to spend to bring it up to emissions spec.

Oh, I have so been there. It's a hard lesson to learn. Also, expensive.
