Gravatar Way late to the game here, but I just wanted to mention that Wawanesa is pretty cheap - several of my friends switched to them and couldn't be happier. But they are quick to drop you if you don't keep a clean record. OTOH, AAA is expensive, but when you need them, they take *really* good care of you. I was once in an accident (not my fault, but the other guy tried to bully me into taking the blame and paying for everything out of pocket), and my lawyer and I spent almost a year preparing a lawsuit. Two weeks before the statute of limitations ran out, my lawyer received a call from AAA saying they already sued the guy, he agreed to settle, how much do you want, we'll add it into our settlement.

Love your blog and your TWoP recaps - you rock!

Gravatar For what it's worth, I had a sort of amazing experience with Nationwide, which was the insurance company of a drunk lady who hit my car in a parking lot while I was 300 miles from home looking for an apartment. They were super-accomodating of the fact that I was trying to make an interstate move in the space of under three weeks, and wound up sending the appraiser to my mom's house, which is in a state in which they don't even offer insurance, and paid right up. I don't know if they're so awesome when you're the insured, but holy crap, they made the whole thing so easy on me, when it could've been an unmitigated disaster.

Gravatar I had almost the same thing happen to me. In my case, I actually creamed the rear-end of a Focus (they do not hold up well when attacked by Silverados-keep that in mind). Of course, it was my fault. But the woman driving the Focus had no insurance, spoke no English and had only a paper permit--with her HUSBAND'S name on it. He showed up and told the cops (in Spanish) that he had been driving. I don't speak Spanish, but luckily my dad was there, and he does. He corrected that man's version of the story, but my insurance still had to pay, even though she was unlicensed and uninsured (which is illegal, at least in Texas).

Gravatar at least your not in massachusetts where the state regulates the insurance rates and theres no competition from other companies

Gravatar Something similar happened with me and State Farm SuckAss Insurance. Uninsured driver, unLICENSED driver, rear-ended me, DROVE OFF! They FOUGHT my claims! I couldn't even believe it... Fucktards... (It's been almost three years and clearly I still have issues...)

Gravatar It may or may not seem worth it in light of post-trip finances, but I saw a lot of insurance claims in a former job, and despite State Farm's stupid, stupid commercials, they seemed to actually handle the claims really well (I don't work for SF, promise). I think they tend to be more expensive (although they're charging my husband less than Geico did), but it looked like it was probably worth it, if something happened. I haven't had to make a claim myself, though, so I can't speak from experience.

Gravatar I almost want to marry you after reading that about Progressive- they can suck my left butt cheek! They did almost the very same thing to me when an old man side-swiped my car, we exchanged info and he drove off before we could call the police and after 2 months of Progressive 'investigating', they paid him!!!!! I had witnesses they never spoke to or anything- and I am still paying the bills they send me...who is the idiot here? Do you have the nimber for that spanish company?

Gravatar If I remember correctly, one tier is included in the basic-cable service. So if you drop variety, you might not actually save any money unless you convince TW to work something out for you.
