It was banned from schools in the 19th centruy. Kids were punished if they were heard speaking it.
Slightly different these days - I went to a Welsh school where you were given detention if you were heard speaking English! The language is definitely gaining in popularity.

South Wales is certainly different to northern parts of the country, but just as beautiful in my opinion.

I just got back from wales too...2 week trip to visit family in cardiff.
I love some of the welsh signs even though it's obvious they've just made up a word in a couple of seconds (good example: taxi is advertised as tacsi)
I'd have to disagree with your comment about the 3 shepherds though. According to the last census, there are approximately 1 million Welsh speakers in Wales and at least 20,000 in London alone.
