You made a delicious dinner per the menu requested by said birthday boy, served it on real china and crystal with linen napkins. The table was scattered with amethyst crystals that matched the napkins (and we know that boy loves shiny stuff). You invited your family which adores your perfectly wonderful child. He was sweet, funny and gracious. Luckily he has you for a mommy, so he has been brought up to appreciate the things in life that really matter and it shows. You did good!

Simple is definitely the way to go. Our son turns 14 next month, and we celebrated his Bar Mitzvah last year. We kept it as simple as possible, but in the end it was bigger than I would have liked - the perils of having a large family, with lots of relatives you never see but nevertheless expect an invitation.
It's hard to explain, but milestones like this aren't about the party or the opulence - his certainly wasn't, as he's a very low-key, laid-back child - but about taking the opportunity to be together with folks who you wouldn't otherwise see.
Somehow, the obscenely overdone affairs seem to miss that point. Thankfully, our son reminded us what matters most. Looks like yours gets it, too.
