Gravatar Now that's "breaking it down."

I think it's probably impossible to think any less of Ty.

Gravatar Dan, while I agree that the article is a devastating report on Willingham's recruiting, I do not fully support your conclusion that this explains last year's sack total, etc.

While the lack of depth certainly explains part of the offensive line's problem, it simply cannot explain the scope and severity of it.

First of all, the recruits on the line that Weis got did not perform well at all. Duncan was well below average in his performance and Young simply stunk most of the time. These guys may have been well regarded by the recruiting mags, but that doesn't always transfer to the field.

Second, I personally observed several instances where poor position coaching seemed to be at work. One I can think of was the o-line's pass blocking. They quickly assumed that the only effective technique they could use was the chop block. But they didn't do the chop block correctly even! (falling to the ground immediately, rather than giving a split second of resistance first). This mistake wasn't corrected until the final third of the season.

Ty's poor performance speaks for itself, but I'm not willing to give Charlie a free pass for what happened last season, based on that. We catalogued too many mistakes and errors last season that had absolutely nothing to do with Ty. This season should be telling. No more excuses.

Gravatar Any chance we can get a post weighing in on Weis and Spygate? I'm thinking it's a free way out (fraudulent inducement) of the mega-contract if he looked like an offensive genius because the Patriots cheated. Any thoughts?

Gravatar You are, of course, presupposing some things.

1. That Weis actually cheated.
2. That Notre Dame could prove Weis actually cheated.
3. That ND could prove they materially relied on his success with the Patriots when they hired him, and to what monetary extent. (How do you quantify it?)
4. That we can ignore the fact that Weis's contract extension was solely based on his success at ND.
5. Most importantly, that we even would want Charlie gone.

That's quite a few "ifs".

Wouldn't you rather have another Willingham post?

Gravatar Good to see the site up and running again. Hope some new posts come soon.
