Gravatar i also am a graduate of Mooney and played many years ago for coach Bucci.I learned a great deal from the coach who was very proud of his ND roots and let us players know the importance of a great education. He spent many hours helping his players get into college .I believe he is in the Ohio High school hall of fame . His long time assistant coach was Ron Stoops another legend who is the father of the Stoops boys who also went to and played for Mooney.

Gravatar "...like Mooney, which are consistently football powerhouses" ... Wouldn't stand a chance against the Roncalli Rebels!

Ok, but trash talking aside, I definitely agree that it's a good thing that Weis is emphasizing the midwest and Catholic high schools.

One of the reasons Catholic football programs do so well is that they have a rich feeder system. In high school, the system is comprised of numerous dedicated Catholic grade-schools. And for ND, the dozens and dozens of excellent Catholic high schools provide a tremendous base of recruiting.

Gravatar I thought we were agreed on the philosophy not to cover recruiting until February on this site...under the "stalking teenage boys" doctrine.

Gravatar I signed no such agreement.

Besides, I make exceptions to plug my old high school.

Gravatar It's a great commitment because he's a top player in Ohio and it's a win over another recruiting powerhouse in the same region (OSU). But what is academically-minded about it? He has said he wants to pursue engineering in college, but chose ND which has a subpar engineering program (at least in comparison to OSU). I don't think academics played a big part in it. I think playing with his brother was what ultimately made up his mind for him.

Gravatar "McCarthy, who plans to major in something involving business, is the 18th verbal commitment for the Irish's 2008 class, which is ranked No. 1 in the country according to some national scouting services. "

""I've said it before, I was going to go to the place that I felt was the best fit for me, whether Kyle was there or not," said McCarthy. "I feel like this is the place. "

So wrong on both counts.

OHIOWNED

Gravatar Tommy, I'm the one who decided to stop following recruiting. The other writers can do what they please.

Gravatar My apologies, I had been reading the post a couple down about Michigan engineering vs. ND engineering. But the statement still fits. OSU's business school is ranked ahead of ND's business school as well. So again academics doesn't seem to have played a big part.

Gravatar Maybe he committed because ND actually graduates their athletes unlike anyone in the Big 10 (or 11) except Northwestern.

Gravatar ND graduates their players? I thought the players worked hard themselves so they could graduate. So if Dan went to OSU (or anywhere else in the Big 10 minus Northwestern) he wouldn't have graduated? I suppose he made a very good decision then.

Gravatar http://www.ncaa.org/wps/portal/! ...l_gsr_data.html

ND's graduation rate: 95%
OSU's graduation rate: 55%

Are you honestly going to argue this?
