"If he fails to live up to OUR standards next year, as I believe he will, Weis will be fired. In the meantime, cheer for these players." (emphais added)
*************
I have no idea if "our" means "Kelly Green" or the fan base in general, but either way it's a revelation that the fans are now paying Weis' salary and setting the standards of his employment. Or is this mere presumptuousness? Do you guys offer dental too?

Pretty good posting. I do not think ND is racist. That is sensationalism. I do think looking at a program as bigger than W's & L's in a season or even two seasons is a bit superficial. The argument about repeating the same mistake is a very good one. There has to be some continuity for a program to succeed. High turnover at the top will kill any organization.
One other point you are correct on: The AD needs time to formulate a plan. A knee-jerk reaction of firing Weis after SU and USC losses without a succession plan would be more embarasing and far more harmful than wait & see. The institution (which is the perpetuation of the football program) would risk what it did when Meyer turned ND down-a reputation of top coaches not wanting to come here. Another difficulty in finding a HC could be devestating. A well thought out plan with contingencies is the prudent course.

Mespo, I gave you the benefit of the doubt for a long time, but now I sincerely wonder if you're just itching to pick a verbal fight.
"Our" obviously (because it's the logical meaning here) refers to the Notre Dame community, including the administration, athletic department, alumni, fans, etc. We all have a stake in Weis and when the university decided the near-term fate of its career, it was attempting to act on all of our interests, I'd say.

Jake, you are absolutely correct. Whatever Latina has been doing for the past few years, it isn't working. He needs to go.
Same goes for our strength and conditioning coach.

Trolls are tiresome.
I think half the reason Weis is still around is that they see the steady train of nice recruits coming in and think to themselves that at some point the talent will just start winning despite Charlie.
Latina needs to go...effective yesterday.

Lucas:
"Going forward, I sincerely hope Irish fans can put aside the enmity that is tearing Notre Dame Nation apart. Weis will be back and bitching about it won't change things. Go to the games, buy merchandise, donate (otherwise how to we afford the buyout?). Weis and the administration are already on notice as to how upset we are, so there is no need for further dissension in the ranks. If he fails to live up to our standards next year, as I believe he will, Weis will be fired."
***
I quoted the passage at length to demonstrate to you that "our" could not possibly refer to the University or its administration or even the amorphous "Notre Dame community." The operative language directly precedes the reference to "our." It says: "Weis and the administration are already on notice as to how upset WE are, so there is no need for further dissension in the ranks." (emphasis added) No fair reading could conclude that "our" in the latter statement does not correspond to "we" in the former statement. Likewise no one could mistake that entire passage for anything other than what it is --a rather inept call for the school to accept the fans standards or else. I don't call that picking a verbal fight. I call it making one accountable for his words and thoughts no matter how foolish they may be.

I wonder how much Charlie would benefit from better assistants. I also wonder if Notre Dame is getting overrated players. I saw in a Stewart Mandel (SI) article that James Aldridge was rated higher than Knowshon Moreno and Lesean McCoy. No coaching could make Aldridge better than those guys. you have to wonder how often this happens.

Beautifully written. I couldn't agree more.
As all my nearby OSU fans (I keep referring to them, as 99% of friends and in-laws are OSU fans, so that is what I am surrounded by) are trying to quote ESPN and whatever other trash tabloids they happen to see, I have been saying the exact same things. Someone was telling me that Urban Meyer just came out and said that his "dream job" would be to coach at Notre Dame. Hmm.... Then why did ND admin go to Utah right before he announced his coaching position at Florida. Anyway, I digress.
People were shocked to hear that I am excited that Charlie is staying. May I add one more point to the many you have already stated?
NFL recruits are looking at Irish players. One reason? "Charlie Weis likes him (Bruton), so we want to look at him." We will continue to get the recruits w/ Weis because of this.
Again, thank you for writing this. I agree 100% with everything you wrote.
One last point... I agree w/ statements about Latina...any news on Haywood?

Dan,
If the update is true, we might have a problem opening up a firm. There are two obstacles I see.
1) You live in Ohio... I realize it could be worse (you could live in Michigan. gross), but I am not ready to settle for Ohio.
2) Your taste in music might be lacking. Obviously this update may not accurately portray the nuances of who you are and what your interests are, but I think you have your work cut out for you if you want to change my mind.

1. Ohio's not so bad. We have no hurricanes or earthquakes, and the world's largest pumpkin pie is made about a half hour from where I live... yea, maybe we could do South Carolina?
2. The update was Lucas, not me. I purposely did NOT post the Blink 182 song when I originally posted this entry because I hate it. If were to include a vid that I actually like and that applies, it would be the Killers' "Smile Like You Mean It."
"Save some face,
You know you've only got one
Change your ways while you're young"
Listen carefully, Weis!

Don't listen to Luke. He thought Creed was the greatest rock band of the decade.

oh Luke, that is so sad. I'm sorry, but Creed? REALLY? I hope you saw that light and realized that they were terrible. Or were you just really into the band because Scott Stapp posed like Jesus on the cross in all of the music videos (usually minus the actual cross)?
Now I picture Luke like a lost puppy-- you just want to take him in and hug him and tell him everything will be alright.

Hmm, so when did this become a referendum on my musical tastes Oh wait, I guess I did open the door when I poked fun at Daniel's love for emo.
I was never that into Creed, but Dan is correct regarding my claim. But some context and clarification are useful.
First (and most important), the limit on "best rock band of the decade" was that the band had formed within that period, not just existed during it. I fully admitted that numerous rock bands were much much much better than Creed. But when you think about it, from 1994 to 2004 not a lot of good rock bands formed. I think but am not certain that the Foo Fighters formed came on the scene then, but they are that great.
The second important limit was that the bands in question be rock bands. I believe that we excluded softer indie bands. I'm a big Death Cab for Cutie fan, for example, and just wouldn't call them a rock band in the same category as Creed being a rock band.
Sigh what am I doing. Am I really trying to defend my taste for Creed again? Losing battle, I know

As much as I would love to get into the myriad of reasons why Creed cannot ever be considered the best rock band of the decade, I am trying to write a very lame final memo about a very dull false imprisonment case which then leads to a still quite dull motion to dismiss brief about libel... all due at 4 pm.
I am absolutely amazing at procrastinating, but I am to the point where I just don't have time to do it tonight. haha.
So, I assume you guys both went here for undergrad, did either of you go here for law school as well?

Yep ND undergrad for both of us (all of KG's writers actually). IU-Indy Law for me. Moritz for Daniel.
False imprisonment eh? Extremely useful topic once you start practicing. Not! Libel can be interesting though.

What dorms/year of graduation are you guys? You really ought to set up the blog so we can search past posts (besides with your little topic link--which reminds me of westlaw). Although, being able to search past posts would probably enable my procrastination to actually hurt my grades, so wait until after Dec. 17th to make and changes.
