Good luck to you on carrying four classes after having been out of school so long...been there, done that, got the T-shirt. It isn't easy, and if you plan on going for your Master's, do the GRE soon after you get your degree - it's a lot easier then.
I am glad to see that you stated that a lot of politics is BS. In reality, many (not all) will say anything to get elected - depending on what they think is the most popular at the time - polls. We used to have statesmen in this country, men who did looked into the future to decide what direction to go. We seem to be lacking those today (and stateswomen as well). Once elected, today's politicians don't seem to do much of anything - except go in circles - just ask anyone who's observed our political process from outside the country.
So what's the answer? Part of it is a more informed voter base - but that means the people need to get all sides of an issue - along with supporting facts. The phrase "almost everybody knows" doesn't cut it. While it is getting easier to get the information, we aren't there yet. Most everyone who is talking about an issue has already made up their minds, and is trying to persuade you to their point of view, whether by actively supporting their side, or only mentioning one side without mentioning the opposing side. This is disingenous, and is commonly seen on many websites.
Of course, that is only part of the answer, I wish I knew the rest.
As for news, you are going to have to rely on the websites, but go to each website with an open mind - and you might be surprised.
