My boyfriend often swears at the screen while playing CoD.
When he goes on a string of insults such as "slut", "whore", "bitch" I ask "Baby, can you please use less gendered insults? Try 'ass' or 'fucker'"
He asks "Can I use 'cocksucker'?"
I say "Nope."
"But 'whore' isn't gendered."
"What do you call a 'man-whore'?"
"Oh, right."
He pretends to be exasperated but it's working.
Here from Shakesville. I love this post. I find this really frustrating, often because I'm probably not very good at dealing with these kinds of jerks. I know some animal welfare activists who insist on making offensive "jokes," and I'm a little mystified that they can be so compassionate towards creatures and so insensitive towards people they mock.
Try not to be so hard on yourself.
