$\"Gravatar\"$ Actually, all that \"FUCK HOPE\" stuff is sarcastic. A good friend of mine (may he rest in peace) grew up with Carlin in Morningside Heights. Carlin was an incredibly caring person, who was unbelievably kind and generous to his friends and family. My friend took me to a few of George's concerts, and I got to spend time with him backstage. He was clearly a down-to-earth loving man, and even thought he pretended to despise humanity, he really loved it.

$\"Gravatar\"$ I agree on the \"he was really a nice man\" stuff but I also agree with you about this wave of hate humor that's out there. There's too much of that in the world already and the world doesn't need any more. There is satire and there is meanness and with George Carlin he was both... but a little more of the mean-spirited his last few years. Maybe his physical decline lent to that anger. I've followed him from his early Johnny Carson appearances (Hippie Dippy Weatherman) all the way through the end and I'd say (on stage) he was eighty percent brilliant satirist and twenty percent cruel bastard. That doesn't excuse the cruelty but I'm just putting it in perspective. And as far as Dave Chappelle goes, I never found that asshole funny, mean-spirited or not! I mean it... his brief adulation and success truly baffles me.
