Just as a side note - the bonebell crew took some xxx roadies out on the trails the week before and this past weekend. It was great fun to take someone out of their 'element' and introduce them to a different means of concentrating on your ride. Case in point, there was a rider that told me that he couldn't believe how fast we took certain sections. Mind you, we were not going balls out either - we were just 'riding along' on a smooth pace dictated by our good flow.
My answer to this fine man who was impressed with the ride leads was simply - "It's not that we were going that fast, but we are familiar with these trails, so we know what to expect".
I know what you meant - certain 'flow' does become ingrained out of familiarity and it is that familiarity that can be an advantage if the game is spot on. Even on a good day, I forget to respect the trail, and bammo, I'm on my butt to a slow ride.....
Racer's preparation is different - I wish I had the mental game that half of my friends have at the starting line at every race.
Be well Chris!!!
