I don't get the commentary? Not everything is about race. Maybe, those Mexicans just like 9 mile?

Goat, maybe you're right. It just came off as weird to me that as the bridal party at Rib Mountain were taking photos with a picturesque background and had reserved parking spaces marked for them, a guy at 9 Mile was on the phone trying to describe how to get there (the rest of the group was clearly lost) and everyone was trudging through the dirt parking lot in their fine clothes. Maybe race didn't have anything to do with it, I'd like to think it didn't anyway.

So the small blocks are the way to go?
I ride a mixed wheel too... what did you ride on the back? I'm riding the 12 hour....so no worries on giving advice

Another thought: Kim and I were big fans of ER back in the day. One bit of dialogue has stuck in my mind for years, probably from season 1 or 2. Dr. Carter, who was white, said the same thing to nurse Haleh, who was black. "This is not about race," he said. She looked him dead in the eye and replied, "For us, it's always about race." Maybe having that in the back of my mind is causing me to see things that aren't there? Like I said, I hope race didn't have anything to do with it.

Hey Ben -- if it stays relatively dry, then absolutely, SB8-SB8, 29x2.1 on front and 26x2.1 on the back. My teammates have been running that for a while, just took me time to catch on!

awesome, thanks! After moving out here to the rockies, I haven't had much time to test out tires on actually dirt - most out here is pretty gnarly compared to WI... I love my 69er out here too, it climbs so nice. later

Ben, I'm with you -- I'm a HUGE fan of the mixed-wheel format. I haven't found anything it doesn't eat up -- from wide-open singletrack in Moab and AZ to buff Midwest ribbons to knarly rock gardens out East. And climbing? Oh yeah!

With half of my family coming from Mexican descent I can tell you to them it's not always about race. It rarely ever is, but my family has always been full of self starters and many who grew up with nothing and have ended up well off because of their own doing. I guess they've had nothing to ever be bitter about the way that ER nurse was.
Every year my relatives have a huge family reunion (my Dad is the youngest of 13) in a park very similar to 9 mile. It has almost nothing to do with the venue, only that it is a great place to get the family together.
I can bet that Mexican family's only thought on having it at 9 mile was that it had everything they were looking for in a picnic/wedding reception.

I just emailed Jeremy -- I realized it wasn't just the ER comment that had me calling race into question this weekend. Unfortunately, it's my upbringing as well -- I've said before that I grew up in about as white-bread area as they come. The underlying racial bias was, and is, absolutely horrible. And the sad truth is, I carry that with me today. As Jeremy points out, race shouldn't have anything to do with the venue choice for a party. Unfortunately, I'm used to hearing that it does -- there are to this day public places that are identified as "Mexican" vs. those that aren't, no matter who actually uses them.
