Nothing but Paspalum Fasciculatum here

Gravatar You are an asshole. Your questions are filled with insipid, pre-chewed phrases as "buying conscienses", "democracy in mind", etc. And the question about Miquilena is innane as well... what did somene betray you ???? Miquilena is a traitor.

Gravatar Your post violates my rules as expressed here: http://paspalum.blogspot.com/200...e-my- rules.html

Feel free to attack the _facts_ behind my post, or to suggest ways to improve on the questions. As it stands, your comments, if kept down the same line would merit suspension from my comment section. So this is your first warning.

You Miquilena 'inanity' comment has no basis either, as who betrayed who?. Chavez by going against everything democratic that Miquilena stood for, or Miquilena by being truth to his conscience and to what he stood for even before he met Chavez?

Gravatar How about asking him a hypothetical question.

If someone was to rig an election what would be things that they would do?

Of course he response would probably be some nonsense that an election could not be rigged and not possible in Venezuela. Ya right!

Gravatar Well Brett, the point is really how many questions will get through. The BBC has shown its bias on every turn (and not only regarding Chávez). Just check what questions have gotten through so far and you will see what I mean.

Gravatar Venezuela is no different than most other countries in it's apathy. America is certainly suffering from it. Basically, it comes down to personal economic satisfaction. If you've got your bases covered there, you'll keep voting for the leaders in power. If not, they'll be tossed. If it hadn't been for Iraq, Bush would have trounced Kerry in the last election. War is the most divisive political move a President can make, so one has to give Bush some credit there for making a very tough call not many Presidents would have made, even if they were convicted it was the right thing to do.

Chavez has consolidated power by basically inviting the economic losers (ie.. rich and middle class) in his new republic to leave the country with his policies and many have done so. It's a great way to eliminate opposition without using force. The poor and lower/middle classes are under the perception that Chavez has been good for their personal fortunes, so they're not unhappy. It will take an event -- possibly a huge dip in oil prices to wake the people up, but Chavez will overstep his bounds sooner or later, and he will become as unpopular as Castro is inside Cuba these days.

Gravatar Some good questions did get through, check the updated article for some links.

Gravatar Brook, now that I re-read your post carefully, and with more time, I realize that there is a misconception of where the Venezuelan apathy is coming from (specially when compared to the American one).

In Venezuela it is more rooted on fear and impotence than anything else. The psychological compensation for that is to stop caring or to find other ways of expressing their discontent like for example through feverish reading and posting of comments in on-line forums, or watching and reading lots of news (I went through those phases, and this blog is in part a consequence of that).

That allows them to somehow 'feel' that they are doing something, though in reality they are just 'sitting there' without taking any real action that would have any real consequence.

In Venezuela basic necessities are not being satisfied (even through the Misiones, or Mercal). An example of this is that recently a throng looted one of the Mercals, even though these have military protection. So in that context apathy is harder to justify.
