Talk Back!

Gravatar That is such a lovely vision! If you work up a pattern I'm about your size as well, and I would buy it

Gravatar I'll be very excited to see your finished product, it's a very feminine shape and design. You bring up a point I was wondering about recently - if you see a piece of clothing that you like and design a pattern for something similar/the same, is it still your design? Can you get into copyright trouble is you publish your pattern?

Gravatar I've been eyeing that sweater in NN for a while too, but I rarely order from them for similar reasons. If you make a pattern I'd buy it too!

Gravatar Jenna,

Your question would take a while to answer, but as it pertains to this particular situation; basing a design, loosely, on a sweater you've seen elsewhere is not copyright infringement. In fact, it's a fairly ubiquitous practice in the fashion industry which is why you have been able to buy ponchos in any women’s apparel store in the country. Many a fashion designer has attempted to trademark a design or design element to no avail, it’s just too slippery a slope and impossible to police.

That said, I think there are certain ethical issues around the topic. I would never attempt to recreate someone else’s design without giving credit, and if the design I was recreating was identical to another pattern designer’s pattern, I definitely wouldn’t distribute my version of the pattern.

You will have to consider your own situation. Some designs, like basic hats or sweaters that use common stitches and simple shaping are just too ordinary to worry about. No one alive today could claim to be the inventor of the design.

Gravatar beautiful sweater. there are some really inspiring items in their catalogs.

Gravatar You must not have ordered anything from Victoria's Secret. I get multiple catalogues a WEEK! It's horrible. That sweater is pretty. Is it an empire waist if there's shaping at the usual waist?
