Scared is what happens when a terror attack becomes very personal when it hits too close to home. It's when your family and friends perish as a result. Your child sleeps with his clothes on at night in case a plane flys through his window. He's scared he won't live long enough to become a teenager.
It's probably like being scared of an earthquake. You know it will probably happen again, but you don't know when or where.
Scared, to me, is not when someone doesn't agree with your political opinions. If that's all you have to be scared of, you must be a very lucky person.
To me, scared is not listening to someone who has a different political opinion.

Thanks for your eloquent post today, Marni. I am still reeling from the fallout yesterday.

I absolutely agree whole heartedly with your statements on politics! I was quite disappointed that Bush won the election and I certainly do not feel that my country is any safer with him in office because of how he has handled Iraq and his "war on terror." I'm also not a fan of Bush for many other reasons, including how he treats the environment, the economy, and education. I do not like the way things have been going here for the last four years and I'm glad to hear someone shares my sentiments.
To further comment, I love your knitting stuff as well. I've made up a couple of your hat patterns and they're great. Thanks so much for sharing!

Right On Sheri! This country was founded because people wanted freedom to express their opinions, worship in their own way, to seek a better life. How horrible is it that in our day one is ostracized because they may not agree with you? It is a very sad day indeed if you are looked down upon because you don't share a political view.

YOU CAN KNIT YOUR ASS OF AND KEEP UP WITH POLITICS. YOU GO GIRL. I LOOK AT YOUR WEB SITE JUST TO KEEP UP WITH YOUR PROGRESS AND I AM AMAZED AT HOW FAST YOU FINISH SOMETHING AND HAVE A LIFE NOT TO MENTION A MIND A MAN A JOB AND A DOG. NO POLITICAL COMMENTS FROM ME IM NOT THAT ADVANCED YET. HOWEVER I DID VOTE AS WELL AS MY 19 YEAR OLD SON AND HIS 18 YEAR OLD GIRL FRIEND WHO ARE MUCH MORE IN TUNE WITH POLITICS THAT I WOULD HAVE GIVEN THEM CREDIT FOR. VOTE OR DIE. MAYBE IM GETTING OLD OR THIS NEW HOBBIE OF MINE IS SUCKING MY BRAINS OUT. IM PUTTING THE FINISHING TOUCHES ON MY FLAMENCO WRAP. 2 WEEKS AND COUNTING.

Very well put, Marnie. I was sincerely hoping that the results of the election would swing the right way. It saddens me to think that the government will be led for four more years by someone who feels it's more important to pump money into a war than in a better education system or proper health plan.

I must apologize for my dissertation on the previous post. I probably sounded self righteous to those who don't know me irl. I swear I'm a nice person. I've been up all night with the aforementioned three children who are only sick if all three of them can be sick at the same time and lack of sleep always makes me testy. I'm glad we live in an age where we can express all ideas especially dissenting ideas.
On a different note, I love the Bella P. Actually I love all the designs. I've made the flapper hat and the dragon hoodie. I'm just finishing the gothic lace sweater. I'm amazed by how prolific you are. Thank you for sharing your designs, ideas and thoughts with the world.

Amy,
I have no doubt that you are a wonderful person. I appreciate your thoughts and welcome them regardless of your political leanings. I can only hope that Bush comes through on his promise to reduce the deficit by half in the next 4 years, because your tax cut now, may be at the detriment to your children in the future.
It frightens me that the average tax savings for the top 2% is something like $50,000 a year. That money would be better spent on education and health care for people in lower income brackets. But, if Bush can reduce the deficit and improve health care costs and properly fund educations then I will have the greatest respect for his dedication to those endeavors.

I do find the argument that Bush can keep us safe while Kerry could not to be incredibly disingenuous. Is he a superhero? It's not like he's going to do anything singlehandedly. The commander in chief is to assert his intelligence, and insight based on the expertise of those under him who are--theoretically, at least--most qualified to provide guidance. God helps us all that Bush is considered the most qualified leader.

Scared to me is having a leader that lies, is misleading and disingenuous to the American public and is quoted as saying as President he does not have to answer to anyone. Even scarier are those who ignore the facts and evidence to justify his immorality.
Scared to me is knowing that by endangering our soldiers for a non-just cause, we have broken our trust with them and will deplete our military, and discourage future enlistment for a military when we REALLY need one.
Scared to me is knowing that I will have to raise my child in an suffered economy that may not allow me to provide the best health care, education, job and safe environment because we have a leader that does not think of America as a whole, let alone has squandered away a surplus that ensured economic stability to replace it with a deficit larger than any other President ever.
Scared to me is knowing that my child may grow up to be gay, and then will not be given the same freedoms as other American's because they fear his/her existence and ability to love is a threat to their own marriages or their ability to get to heaven.
And don't worry, none of us Dems at all feel there is anything wrong with having a difference of opinion and saying it…Remember, we are the ones that have endured the past four years being called "unpatriotic", "traitors" and "terrorist" by Bush and your party for speaking our difference of opinion. Oh, the irony!

I love your designs! and now i love how you stated your opinion intelligently and rationally. I am too emotional right now to talk about this. I just cannot believe that our fellow citizens are more worried about gay people getting married than people dying in iraq or the environment. It makes no sense to me. I love your website.

Well put, Marnie. It's been really uplifting to read so many knitting blogs where my cyberfriends are sharing their heartfelt and intelligent opinions. We will have a long four years, but I'm already looking to 08....

I'm Canadian, but I've been following your election pretty closely because it impacts the whole world.
To paraphrase a political scientist I heard on CBC (lovely Canadian media outlet) the other day.... Until now, the world has been able to blame Bush for the war in Iraq. Now, officially, the world can start to blame Americans, as they have returned him to office despite all his mistakes.
That sure wouldn't make me feel safe if I were an american citizen.
Off my soap box now... Marnie, I enjoy your blog. You do beautiful work.

My my. Sheri honey I'm sorry you sound like an idiot. You may not be an idiot but you sound like and ignorant fool. I don't agree with how Marnie says the the things she feels about the election but I respect her right to feel them, I respect your right to feel what you feel too but don't be an A** about it. And to that Amy who is raising 3 kids on $28,000. You've got my sympathy but if it weren't for Reagan, Bush 1 and Bush 2 the Government would be providing more services to help your family, Gov't subsidized Health care for children for one thing. Not giving the MASSIVE Tax breaks to the multi millionaires for another.
I lost my best friend when insurgents bombed the UN in Baghdad. I don't want to hear any more crap about the soldiers or the war, you can support our troops and want them to come home in the same breath. That war is a sham, and a horrible wretched waste. The president is still lying about it. The war in Iraq is not the war on terror (side thought, how does one wage war against an amorphous thing like an emotion?)
What keeps me going right now is this thought- The Truth will Out.
And, its only 4 more years (repeated, like a mantra)
Peace to all of you we will all need it. Marnie you are very very talented, I have great respect for your artistry.

Your blog is so well written, Marnie. I happen to agree with everything you said. (Not the mention the knitting in beautiful.) I also respect the rights of other posters to express differing opinions. However, I would like to point out that not everyone from NYC agrees with Sheri. NY, largely because of the downstate city precints, voted decisivly for Kerry. For that matter, the other place that has been directly targeted by terrorists, Washington D.C. did also, by about 80% to 20%.

Good point Quincy. I for one am one of those from the DC Metro area. I had just arrived to work when the Pentagon was hit, which was about a half a mile from my office. Though I don't know anyone personally that was lost, I do remember the horror of our city under attack (we knew there were other DC targets) and the mass evacuation. Maryland and Northern VA (DC commuters) also voted overwhelming for Kerry.

I've received the comment, too, that soldiers are "happy" to be in Iraq. No one in their right (or left, teehee) mind should be HAPPY about being sent to war. My husband pointed out an article on how soldiers coming home are being flown in on planes at 2 am and are hidden away at Walter Reed Hospital out of range of cameras. Why? One can only assume the outrage that would pour forth to see sons, brothers, uncles, fathers maimed for life. Yet Osama still lives. How can we best support the troops in Iraq? Bring them home.
