I don't know how much this will help, but if you have someone e-mail me I'll grant permission to use anything of mine. For things that have been published, they'll still need permission from the free mags, too, but I doubt it would be a problem. You might consider contacting Amy Knitty and Kerrie of Magknits to see if something can be arranged on a grander scale. With their permission, I'm sure the individual designers will come on board, too. Both mags have several very nice patterns that are perfect for this kind of event.
I have heard designers are often receptive to allowing their patterns to be used if you ask permission.
I remember reading somewhere that it is legal to sell a project made from a copywrited pattern if the money is given to charity. I think they were talking about cross stitch kits, but I imagine the same could apply to knitting.
It is very pretty, even if not quite what you were going for. Hope you can make it work somehow!
