I love that it is so pretty. In one of the Burda sewing magazines in the craft bit they had curtains and bowls made with the same technique. I would love to try the bowl

Hi, here's a website that explains a technique like that,

Oh, WOW. That is one of the coolest things I've ever seen! I had never heard of this technique before. Thanks for sharing.

The process was also described in an old Threads magazine article, but it might not have been described as lace (or embroidery, which is the other way I fruitlessly searched for this):
"Creating reversible fabrics on the sewing machine", Threads June/July 1994, issue 53. The subtitle reads "Dissolving the stabilizer leaves nothing but the thread". I recall that the fabric created as an example in the article was heavier in appearance than the free lace you've created.

That is really cool, Marnie! The fabric looks pretty great from where I'm sitting.

Well, that's . . . interesting! I do like the "moody" shot, but am not entirely sure what I think! (Not because your sample is less than lovely, mind you, but because I like order and pattern and structure to my lace and prefer things to be "neat." But that's just my personal quirk, so please ignore that!)

Jenanne (from http://www.jenanne.com/blogger.htm) did a bunch of free lace- with great results. She is a talented fibre artist-go and see what she has made!

I love it! Like Deb I don't think it's really for me, but I can definitely appreciate it as a form of art. I wonder who came up with the idea for free lace...

I've never heard it referred to as free lace, but I've seen it alot in the art quilting arena. Some folks made Thread Dusters (the garment, not some magickal tool to pick up your loose threads with) I made a belt out of Berroco Optik using this technique...or a rudimentary version, anyway!

Oh that's pretty cool! That's more than "vaguely interesting". It could be a goth-style stole.
