On one level, we have taught many / most kids that they are just fine as they are. Then they go out into the world on their daily business and don't FEEL that they know enough to handle what's around them. So some become careful and uncertain, perhaps even timid, and for GOOD REASON: They don't know what they're doing. But if if they keep getting out there and learning by making mistakes or by being shown / mentored then they do gradually come to know and they do build the knowledge and experience to justify the faith in themselves they have been told they should already have.
Parents and teachers (adults) know kids will learn and grow, but they don't do kids any favours by according them the status of already learning and knowing. Some kids, unable or unwilling to learn anything useful, are nevertheless utterly full of themselves and their own completeness and perfection. The are wonderful. One on level they are, but thse kids lack the experience and knowledge to understand WHAT levels this is true and not true.
What am I raving about? Maybe we con some kids who really are just ordinary kids into thinking they are extraordinary....and we aren't doing them any favours. They will come to understand they really are just ordinary and that morning shift at McDonalds or making pizza at Dominoes is their lot unless and until they become curious and at the same time learn to THINK. *Then* they will be wonderful and conscious and actors in the world. Until that moment, they are catle, consumers, aphids to be milked for the wealth and betterment of others, dressed in the latest fashion and swimming in debt for empty useless shit they don't need.
