Australia made a whole slew of good movies in the seventies. In the US we're told that the only reason the Aussie movies dried up was withdrawal of gov't support. A lot of the Australian film directors moved to Hollywood and some still do good work but it mostly seems blander and less distinctive.
I'm sure the Aussie gov't has more important things to spend their money on than movies, so I get it, but still...
