Gravatar hey, I've been lurking here for a while. I feel this way too. In 1999 I was on a trip in an area that was still experiencing a lot of violence. One day we were downtown and an American Apache helicopter flew in close cover over the buildings. Those were some of "our guys", and yet my stomach still flipped over and i thought i was going to melt into the ground. Those things are terrifying.
We also heard a lot of gunfire, landmines, etc. Scary stuff.
A couple years later, on 9/11, after they'd grounded all domestic airliners, i heard military jets zooming overhead heading westward, probably from a base here near my town. The sound of it had me on my knees.

It took a long time before most of us could hear a normal commerical jet go overhead and not freak out...Even now I can get jittery about low-flying planes.

Gravatar Hey, thanks for lurking - and now commenting! I'm glad I'm not the only one who has fear reactions to aircraft at times. It's amazing how past experiences can colour the rest of our lives, even when our logical heads tell us there's nothing to fear....

Gravatar For a person who lives near an airport and constantly hears sounds of airplanes ahead ... it's hard to imagine if I were in your shoes. In fact, it is difficult to imagine a childhood where I'm afraid of the sounds ... thanks for sharing it with us, Michelle!

Gravatar Funny enough, the sounds didn't scare me when I was little. They were just part of life. It's now, that I'm older and know more about wars and things, now that I have my own child - now I'm scared! Weird...

Gravatar I got freaked out by the sound of a snowplow going up my street once. It sounded like an armored personnel carrier, one that used to patrol outside our compound at regular intervals. It really set my heart racing til I stopped and remembered I was home and safe. Strange stuff!
