"בסרי הראשונים הן מאשכנז והן מספרד, אין איכור לפסוקים שונים בעת הוצאת הספר, רק הש"ץ מכריז "גדלו" והקהל עונה "לך ה' הגדולה".
The machzor Nirenberg has Shema Yisreol before Gadlu (This is already mentioned in Mesechta Sofrim)
"מאת המחבר ר' דוד ב"ר יוסף קארקו, נדפס בקושטא שנת רצ"ה, עלה לארץ מטורקיה, ורשם לעצמו מנהג התפילה בירושלים [מהספרים החשובים למנהג המקורי בא"י!]"
That's only for Sephardic minhagim. It would be interesting to find a similar early source for Ashkenazic minhagim in Eretz Yisroel. Some current Ashkenazic minhagim In Eretz Yisroel which appear to be old are in fact fairly recent. I think that even the minhag of saying Birchas Kohanim every day was started by the talmidei Hagr"a as mentioned Pe'as Hashulchan.

Yechiel: Congratulations on your first post.
Shalom Ash: A good second hand seforim soicher could have it, although they are pretty rare. It has been published in 2 versions - one by Kahane in 1896 (this version has been published again - I don't know the year), and one by Bick in the 1980s. Both versions are faulty, according to Shachter, who wrote his thesis on R. Yakov Emden. Bick's is far worse, because as an Emden descendent he has an agenda. Schachter promised to write a proper authoritative annotated version but this has never appeared. Maybe Menachem knows of a pdf of Kahane's version, which is the more reliable of the available 2. It is a riveting book and an absolute must read. Don't rest until you have found a copy to read.

It is available online for free at

Or, if you purchase the CD from the Hebrew University of R. Emden's writings it is there as well.

Thank you all
A few years ago, I read a big chunk of Megilos Sefer. I don’t know for sure which version but it was written in a very clear print and the Sefer had a new cover, so it was most probably the reprint of Kahane’s version.
I tried a few used seforim stores and nobody had it. I’ll keep trying
Is a pdf of Shachter’s thesis available online?
Interestingly, the famous Jewish NY senator (maybe even the first Jewish senator), Jacob Kopel Javits, was a direct decedent of Reb Yakov Emden aka the "Yaavetz". The NY Javits center is named after the Senator. So in essence the Javits center is named after Reb Yakov the Yaavetz.

"maybe even the first Jewish senator"
Hardly. The first Jewish senator was named Levy, from Florida, in the 1830's or so, but I think he converted. Then there was Judah Benjamin, who also held every cabinet position in the CSA.

Sorry, I got mixed up. He replaced Lehaman who was also a Jew. Both were for a time, the only Jew in the senate.

Sorry, I meant his word was taken seriously as law. Especially those related to faith and belief, which today in orthodox communities is considered Law.
The style of his writing was also disputed and most Halachic figures disagreed with many of ideas and concepts.
Read marc Shapiro book “The Limits of Orthodox Theology: Maimonides' Thirteen Principles Reappraised” for Achronim who dispute his word as law even todayOr Must a Jew Believe Anything? Menachem Kellner for Reshonim who disagreed with him. Blaich also wrote a great book.
But thanks anyway for the chabad slur. Sorry, I meant his word was taken seriously as law. Especially those related to faith and belief, which today in orthodox communities is considered Law. But thanks anyway for the chabad slur. We in Chabad learn and know Rambam probably the best in the Charadi world. Who else learns daily Rambam besides Chabad??
