i read this today in the chronicle and couldn't believe it. (i also can't believe i read the chronicle, but that's another story.)
it reminded me of this friend of mine in saltillo whose skin is pretty much white and her boyfriend's was a lot darker. for like the first two years they were together her mom wouldn't speak to her boyfriend or let him in the house, etc. they got married last year and until the last minute her mom said she wasn't going to the wedding.
it's sad man. and then seeing latinas walking around the fruitvale with umbrellas. racism is some insidious shit. whitey will pay.
hi came across your page trying to look up history of hip hop rap etc...Im hispanic too...I just saw this in time magazine and this has been an ongoing subject between me and other friends from latin american countries...me and some other born in the U.S. hispanics really are amazed at howracist some hispanics are..they view black people like aliens...but I didn't understand how until I visited my cousins back in 2000 ...I saw that they watched a lot of media( U.S.) that portrayed blacks negatively....and when we talk to them its like trying to talk to a 4 yr old ...in making them understand that those stereotypes theyve developed are allll wrong....and its true what you said...a lot of us (espceially those born in the latin american countries) feel that white is somthing special ...they'll deny indian ancestry when they look indian as hell...they prize their chelitos( is that how you spell it?) their light skinnedness... and color their hair bright orange in an attempt to make it look blond. ..personally its a disgrace to see that they view the world in a very backwards way...I only hope that more positive( black media) is thrown their way to dispell their antiquated stereotypes...sorry if I typed it to booky ... : )
