So when i first read your article, i wasn't agreeing with you. I like the Afroman CD. I also like Chronic by Eligh. But Saturday night I was at a strip joint in Tucson and the DJ played Bammer Weed. I realized just how retarded RBL Posse sounded, and the breezie workin the pole only made it worse.
I still like Afroman though, and I have a tough time talkin shit about Eligh songs (except when he raps about his mom). But I'll never listen to a rap song about weed the same again. Damn you!

yep. i like afroman. and after that experience, i no longer like bammer weed (the song). i dunno - i LOVE strip clubs, esp TD's west, but that song just killed it for me. or maybe you did, cause it might not have struck me how wack it was if the idea of weed songs being wack wasn't already stuck in my head. but i'm back in sac and my opinion hasn't changed. so yeah, i'm for real.

saying you hate all weed songs is like saying you hate all love songs. it's shortsighted and narrow. there are good songs and there are bad songs. some of the good ones are about weed and some of the bad ones are too. rick james' 'mary jane' is a great song. afroman...not so much. why not judge on the merit of the song itself, not just its subject. one more thing: this 'gimmick' was also popular among jazz musicians from 30s-60s, but produced some incredible music. care to comment?

check out cab calloway's "the man from harlem", or chick webb's "when i get low i get high"-- just to name a few.

Thing is I pretty much do hate all hiphop love songs. I know it's shortsighted but that doesn't bother me. A few good songs aren't going to stop me from hating on gimmicks. These songs have been corny as hell for too long. I included Devin in this piece but I actually really like his music. Even though I like what he does that doesn't erase the fact that these songs are tired and predictable.
I know this theme has been around before people were rapping but I felt like my point was to target it's use in hiphop because I feel like hiphop uses this theme way more and wore it out on a much larger level. Cab Calloway didn't base his career on a pot leaf.

It ain't reallly about subject matter, it's creativity, and skill that distinguish cornball from eightball. still that article was hilarious and that was all that matters to me.
