He sends his old grandmother a postcard from a pack she obviously got as a gift for him (as alluded to in the first sentence) and all of a sudden he's some racist? You're grasping at straws here, my friend.

It's the REAL BILL...thats all! unfortunately, most citizens are only acquainted with the protracted Bill, because most people dont read, research or think beyond the scope of mass media. So his policies go unknown. Bill is Americas most successful pied piper of Negroes.

Yes but note that the stamp he used had Lincoln's face on it, so it evens out.

The Clintons are Stalinist thugs who are capable of doing this to their own citizens.

He knew what he was doing when he posted that card.
It wasn't funny then, it's not funny now.

You are an idiot.
Hope was known for its watermelons.
You are the racist, because in your sick mind, you think that is a racist postcard.

Well, if it's not racist, serfie, why can't you find one today? If you could find one today,at your local Walgreens, would you mail it? I'll bet you can't find that card even in Hope, Arkansas. Bet your house payment.
You're grasping at straws to protect your favorite Bubba, serfie.
Go get you one of those postcards, serfie. Then send it to Bill, care of the New York Times...

Serr8d-
If I was from Hope, Arkansas-- proud of its watermelon heritage-- and my granny sent me a pack of cards like that to send out, I wouldn't have any problems it.
I think you are racist because you see racism in that postcard.

Thanks for the link, Joe.
Serfie, why don't you take a poll somewhere to see what other people think about this card?
Somewhere...else?

The message on the postcard is a note home but doesn't say anything racist. The picture is simply an artistic alteration of a photo of a black child and a watermelon.
The photo is simply a cultural reference. It's not a black child being lynched - it's a black child being silly with a watermelon.
While Arkansas is a fairly racist state, you can interpret it any way you want. And obviously, people have done that.

One more comment - the post is obviously biased toward the right (hint: Gore in fascist garb on a stamp). There's nothing racist about the postcard. The poster / auctioneer simply believes that it will help drive the auction price up if it racist slant is thrown in.
Clinton didn't earn the title "first black president" for nothing. I am disappointed in the Clintons - but I am still proud of their time in the White House in the 90's.

Ginger, I'll bet you have several of those postcards handy, that you send out to all your friends. Right?
Everyone (except for the three Clinton supporters left in the Democratic party) realizes that this was a racist postcard, and sending it was a mistake. As many are now realizing that the Clintons would do anything to anyone to win, at any cost.
We need to break the cycle of Bush-Clinton-Clinton-Bush-Bush-Clinton now, before this country is stained by these two families for at least 24 years.
The only thing Hillary is right about, is we need CHANGE.

The postcard is racist, in my opinion. But, in fairness to Bill, his "Mammaw" gave him the postcards, so that he would keep in touch while away at college. No doubt, Mammaw had a racist streak, but young Bill was just placating his granny. He should have known better, but in 1966, the entire country was much less sensitive to racial issues than it is today. I give Bill a pass on this one.

Hello, Loner, thanks for stopping by.
Well, in 1966 I wasn't old enough to immerse in the politics of the time (I was in 2nd grade) but I do recall my father's rants against racism.
Bill Clinton was a Georgetown University Junior who graduated in 1968, then he won that fabled "Rhodes Scholarship" to Oxford University. He was a child, sure, but he probably had some judgmental facilities intact (unless they periodically went up in smoke...
He should have known better. He was in Washington, D.C., he was seeing the country's racial strife closer than 99% of the rest of the nation, and he's looking at that postcard and grinning while licking the stamp.
He should have picked up a postcard of the Lincoln Memorial to go along with that Lincoln stamp, and posted that. He could always plead 'I lost' that racist pack, or something.
UNLESS he really had his own streak of careless racism working, that is.
Given the Blue Dress thingy later in his career, it might be he just didn't care. Thoughtless. I think his overriding mindset is 'good times for me' narcissism...
And, he's gotten too many passes already (but not near as many as he's made, I'll warrant...)

serr8d - good pts and all of the apologist are just being their consistent hypocritical selfs.
I - as a (young, white) woman have been empathetic towards other groups my whole life. Once when young I was at a family gathering and heard (extended) family members make racial comments - I took them to task immediately I didn't play along to "make nice". Hey, but then again, I knew the Clinton's had NO CHARACTER almost immediately - I didn't need to have him INSULT me personally before I could recognize or acknowledge a lack of character!
VERY TELLING how many people need the rapist to rape (VIOLATE) THEM or their family before they can see.

Your bias is blinding you. What's with the "fabled" Rhodes scholar? That was a fact. Just because you don't like him, doesn't change history. Also, it's pretty obvious his grandma sent him those cards to use to write to her. He was just humoring his grandma. Also, another poster made a point. This was not a racist card. There was no black joke. You're the racist.. looking at everything as a race issue. Just cuz it's a black child doesn't mean it's racist.
I'm Puerto Rican and if I saw a card with a Puerto Rican in front of a plate of rice and beans, I wouldn't cry racism. You really are grasping at straws here.

Hey, the Clintons need all the apologists they can muster. You're in a long, long line of 'em.
You know what? They really don't care about you. You know why? You're not a patron. It's the folks who can help them along the power path that they appreciate most.
It's only 'the power' that they want, the rest, just superfluous and expendable.
You'll see only what you want to see, and what they agree for you to see.
With your Clintonesque blinders...

This is ridiculous. His Grandmother obviously bought him the postcard to send back to her. So the only argument here is whether his Grandma was a racist or not.
So over 40 years ago maybe his Grandma from Arkansas was a racist.
WHO CARES?

So, did his Grandmother lick the stamp in Washington, D.C., during the most significant civil rights movement in U.S. history to date, and post the card to herself? Shouldn't Bill Clinton have bought a local postcard and sent that?
You're an apologist. Bill likes your type...easily manipulated and fooled.

yes. Bill the racist. He goes to hell on a postcard. He probably designed the postcard himself. And grew the watermelon knowing it would make some big toothed black boy drool. Oh evil Bill! I have it on the least of authority that that very boy is in fact one of Bill's illegitimate hatelove children. That boy is now - yes, I have it on the worst of authority- Barack Obama! Oh, how delicious the irony and that old watermelon!

So don't vote for Hillary Clinton...? Is that your point? Don't worry, I wasn't going to. Even though this racist postcard business is quite a reach for something to be upset about.
There are much more relevant things going on in the world. Our next President will be a black man. So I don't think this postcard ruined the Civil Rights movement or anything.

The postcard just served to expose Bill Clinton, a bit more than he would've liked. Just a window to his history, and his thoughts.
In itself, the postcard is a collector's curio, it's value set by whatever someone paid for it. Because it hasn't surfaced, I'd guess that this record may be one of the last the public will see of it.
Because, if Bill (or Hillary) bought it back, it will have been destroyed.
But, maybe Obama or someone in his camp bought it...for use as an October Surprise!
;D
