GLOBAL AMERICAN DISCOURSE

Shah,
This is a somewhat trivial comment....
You mentioned Professor Niall Ferguson at Harvard University describes British leadership in abolition of slavery.
Have you heard about the new American movie Amazing Grace? The movie shows the Christian influence in the abolition of slavery in the British shipping industry (1800s).
The movie's web site:

I went to see the movie yesterday and may write a review of it.
I'll be back at a later time to comment on some other material is this excellent essay you have written here.

Unlike Britain and America, both Spain and China had no intellectual basis for global moral leadership.
I'm so glad that you said that! And, you know, it's not just a matter of Christian influence. The combination of the Great Enlightenment and the Protestant Reformation worked together to create that moral leadership.
Sadly, however, neither of those philosophies want to admit that the other philosophy contributed something good to Western philosophy. **sigh**

AOW,
The movie you mentioned seems to be very interesting. Just a small step toward freeing African slaves led Britain to mobilize the strongest navy in the world to intercept slave traders.
I would check it out to see which movie theater to go.
As to enlightenment and Protestantism, they are related each other. However, they contradict occasionally. The former emphasizes religious tolerance, while the latter emphasizes religious passion.
I may have to read Max Weber's book on Protestantism to understand the relation between Protestant ethics and modernization.
So many classical masterpieces on philosophy.
