And oh, the Gladiator is an archetypal hero. That's why he suddenly gets up to agree to the King's request to save Rome (notice the 2 busts of ancient Roman generals in the b/g?) A sudden change even though he just had a long session talking about his home (& family), even counting the number of hours he had been away from home. Oh, & don't forget the scene of him him kissing the 2 small effigies of a mother & son. He doesn't voice his love for family because it's all in the visuals.
And hey, what's all this about 'respected, 'authority', etc? I'm just a guy who loves film (I repeat). So many of my students & pals have disagreed with me - & they have told me so. So what's the big deal?
