Gravatar Hey Jalylah,

I think your piece on Bahamadia is interesting, well composed and thorough. At first I checked the video and felt like it was the same old stuff I had heard on the other tracks that I didn't like. "Rugged Ruff" is also not doing it for me on her part... I am not biased against nerdy rappers (after all, this discussion came about from a post on Sir Menelik) but I really find her lyrics irritating. There are very few rappers that I think can get away with saying shit like "sparkle like magnesium" and "grammatical vortex" -- Pharoahe Monch is one of them, maybe Ras Kass too. It's just not my style, I think. Her flow is pretty impressive technically, but again I think she's whispering on the mic and it just doesn't make me want to listen. The beat is very energetic and the sound of her voice doesn't reflect that at all.

"Wordplay" is really good though. I mean, she still has some new-Black-Thought/Talib-Kweli-esque cheesy lyrics, but she shows some personality here with her vocals and switches up her flow quite successfully. Great fucking beats on both, damn.

Once again, I feel like a jackass for having talked (authoritatively, nonetheless) about her career without knowing her real trajectory. Still not that into her, but now at least I can say I at least heard her sounding good.

BTW-- I was looking through your posts and I saw that you reviewed my album. I totally forgot that I had sent it to you and I haven't really been looking at music sites for a while so I didn't notice, but thanks a lot for the feedback and the attention. And you're not the only person who is puzzled by my song titles.

Gravatar Love this post. Huge Bahamadia fan, and the Gladys/Curtis reference in the title is a beautiful thing.

It would be interesting to visit the alternate universe in which Bahamadia looks like Vida Guerra and is hip-hop's biggest star.

Gravatar most gifted female emcee ever...in my opinion.

bar lauryn hill.

Gravatar sorry small the correct answer is spelled L-Y-T-E.

Gravatar i'm not suggesting a candidate for G.O.A.T. but I'm curious, noz, as to how you feel about the fact that Lyte didn't write some of her hits.

Gravatar ummm...i don't think emotional breakdowns only affect female artists..(Bizzy Bone of Bone Thugs, 2Pac, ODB, Bobby Brown,Tame One of Artifacts, Aesop Rock, and most notably DMX, who often cried on stage during performances. Hurt is hurt. Lets not start singling out female emcees as these fragile beings.

BTW...i loved the article.
