I think you need to avoid both extremes. I find most 'nice guys' are actually complete dickheads to be honest. It's not 'nice' to be a clingy, jealous dickwad.
With the DickDicks the key is to kick people to the curb immediately if they start to act retarded. It took me a lot of time but I realized you have to take people for what they are and just leave if that's not what you want. You'd think people would learn, but they really don't.
