I think that in the face of the world's pain and insanities, laughter is a very good thing. So, what you do is important work.
My brother is a stand-up comedian. His name is Marty Daniels. He's very funny. You can Google him, assuming that's legal in your part of California. (He also produces comedy shows under the name of Bingo's Comedy.)
I'm a preacher. Sometimes, unintentionally, I'm the "funny brother" in our family.

You'll find your funny. Sometimes life just slows us all down a little. Wish I could get away from the kids and come see the show - do you think you could arrange to come to Sioux Falls SD and plan something as good?

It isn't JUST that you're funny, Tony. We've gotten to know you; well, the "you" that you put out here, and we will worry about you if you don't post at usual intervals.
Yes, we need you, and we need you to be funny (especially during hurricanes and terrorist attacks!), but at least for me, if you're out here being funny or just trying to get your "funny" back, at least we know that you haven't drowned, or blown away, or been blown up, and then we don't have to worry about you this time.
You're family now, so stay in touch.

I sooo wish I was anywhere near you to attend that show. You'll find your funny.
But I suspect, you need to mourn first. We all do. Sigh.

We all need a dose of funny. We need four minutes and six seconds of side-splitting totally irreverent humor, followed by 24 seconds of silence and then a 30 second reminder of the people who haven't been laughing much the last week.
We all need to give what we have to give. You, Dr Calabrese, need to give us the laughter back. You still have it to give, it's just a little under water about now.
When it emerges again then we'll all rememeber how much we've missed it and be grateful again instead of sorrowful.

I know what you mean with writing during the tragedy in New Orleans. I stopped posting a few days myself and I'm not even funny. Anyhow, it's good to see you back. Comedians don't have it easy, I suppose. We're all looking to you to cheer us up. But who's going to cheer you up?

We're all feeling it. Unlike you, I have spewed my rage for days now via the blog.
But in situations like this one, I personally believe comic relief is indispensable. Bob Hope entertained soldiers in several different levels of literal Hell, because you have to be able to laugh, even if it's only for a little while. The laughter is both a way to put aside the horror for awhile, and also a way to start the healing.

Tony, there are 2 kinds of humour. The small kind, that just makes people laugh for a few minutes, and is usually at somebody else's expense, you know, guy falls over on sidewalk kind of humour, or plain old nasty sarcasm, that always leaves somebody on the wrong end of it, etc. Then there's Real Humour, that makes you look at yourself, and change things about your own life, and see something about the world, or people, or yourself, that you never saw before, and that is the best kind.
Your kind of humour is the best kind, and I've actually learned a lot from it.
Great post. I'm glad you found that out about yourself, and your humour.
Do your thing! We need it. You make the world a better place.

You got funny! And we, your fans are sending it to you. Days you feel like crap and not funny are they same as the rest of us that do jobs where we are not "on". But the love of it is what matters. You never lost your "funny"...maybe it just needed a few days off! Now go make em pee in their pants!

Your funny can't be far away, but I sure understand how it feels somehow "weird" to have funny at the surface during a time of such heartache. I didn't post all week, either, because I didn't feel like anything I had to say deserved a moment of anybody's time. Time goes on, though, and I know you'll find your funny, because the Red Cross needs your funny even more that we do!

Deep down inside, you know that you have the sense of humor, the sense of rage, if that is what it takes, to get through this or any ordeal. Keeping it real so to speak, is what gets us through our day. It's the same with a lot of people. Firemen, Policemen, Parimedics, they all have their own brand of humor. A kind of humor that no one else might appreciate, or might find crass. For a reason! They see it every day. We don't. But now we are, via CNN or whatever. Work with it, not against it, and you will find your "funny". Best wishes.

It's a hard balance between being sympathetic and continuing on with regular life. I know I felt worlds better when I finally got in touch with a shelter that is accepting all comers to volunteer. I would suspect that you will feel better and find your funny as you are actively helping those in need. We can't do it all, we just each need to do what we are able.

This is the first time I stumble on your blog, so I don't really know how funny you are or can be, however this reminded me of a day from about 6 months ago, my sister tired to kill herself, she slashed her wrists in 34 places that needed over a 100 stitches. I was sitting in the mental hospital waiting room with her waiting for our dad to bring her some fresh cloths and a tooth brush, and we started to talk about what she can dress in for Purim (a sort of Jewish version of Halloween)with all the bandages on - we started off by the obvious "mummy", "frankenshtian" and so on, then we started with funny stuff like "waitress on roller-blades with bandages" or "playboy bunny, with bandages". It wasn't too funny, but it made both of us laugh, it trivialized the situation and brought something familiar into our lives and into a situation that was so horrid and unfamiliar we didn't know how to react in.
You don't have to be funny if you don't want to - I relay on my humor a lot to get people to like me as well and feel naked in situations I can't be funny at. If you feel a need to joke about this, go right a head, if you feel a need to be sad and serious, that's pretty reasonable as well.

I can't stand continuous jokes, meaningless subjects all along a conversation. That's probably because I have it all the time, that's all I got from others. So I end up missing serious and meaningful conversations.
However, and that's true, there are people helping the world by making people laugh. So in the end, all that matters is how you want to contribute to the world.
This post of yours was meaninful, honest, straight out from the heart, so I guess you manage both to come up with funny posts and deal with serious matters as well.
Don't give up, Tony, there are times for laughing and times for taking it seriously, and wisdom bless those who knows how to combine them deftly.

Hey.. I think I found your funny. I was cleaning my paint brushes out, and that's of course where I found God (because the article i read in that magazine i don't subscribe to instructed me i could, along with all the other readers of said article, find him there.), and I noticed he was keeping it in a little bottle on a chain around his neck. Go figure.

I think I found your "funny" sitting at a truck stop outside of Dayton, Ohio broke down & out of gas money. I gave him a 1/2 tank so he should be back shortly.
I love your blog and look forward to the reunion of you and your "inner zen humorist". Sometimes humor is the ONLY thing that keeps us from going stark raving mad in a world so out of control. Events like Katrina allow us to put the "pause button" on our own lives and reexamine our sense of priorities.
Be blessed.

Don't put yourself under so much pressure. With regards Katrina versus your own groans...problems must be looked at in context.
Good on you for doing the gig for Katrina's victims, and don't worry, you'll find your funny, when you really need it.
