The Brisker Rov said the same thing when they tainah'd that lighting 2 hours after motzai shabbos (Brisker rovs chumra) is too late.
Mistama the same can point can be made about lighting on erev shabbos, that we are not lighting bidieved after plag, but rather at the right time for erev shabbos

Anon,
Regarding erev shabbos I had the same thought and someone just showed me that it is brought down that the brisker rov says this vort b'nogayah erev shabbos.

um, at least according to the shulchan aruch prefered zman is just after tzeis hakechovim, not shkiah.
I never understood that whole idea. It says shkiah very clearly and that anything before that is only bidieved.

1/2 nut,
There is a machlokes rishonim if the gemorah's term עם שקיעתה means tchilas shkiah or sof shkiyah (tzais). Many are therefore noheg to light at the earlier zman and to put in enough oil so that it will last until 1/2 hour after the later zman.

I suppose thats a similar although lesser comparison to the kid who's born in bain hashmashos of friday night.
except in this case what is at stake is the hiddur mitzvah.
each to his own I guess.
