A friend of mine got one of her teaching practice assignments at a place she hated on principle: Eton. Loved it - won't here a word against the place.

I did my PGCE in 1959 and it was exactly the same then.The "academic" component was pretty useless from a practical point of view and felt very low-powered intellectually after the final year of my degree.
