I think there are only 2 out of 30-odd EU countries in which HD is illegal - the two obvious ones. This has't stopped Islamists from saying - "look at Europe where Mohammed is not protected but the Jews are".
I'd hate to see such a law here but I can understand why they have it there, given the fact that they DID kill several million Jews and a fair few others.
Nonetheless the severity of the sentence, for a seventeen year old speech made by a foreigner, is striking. It will be used in the Middle East as evidence that the Zionist conspiracy is alive and well.

I think along with Austria and Germany, France, Spain, Belgium, Estonia (I think) and Poland are EU states that have it, along Switzerland. I share you view that such a law, while understandable and defensible, would be unwise. It would allow - as it surely will in this case - people who do not believe in free speech to appear martyrs for it.
Lithuania but not Estonia. The Estonians have still not come to terms with their past(and it's doubtful that the Lithuanians have either).

You teach in a school do you not? What is so difficult to explain to people that the principle of free speech should not be compromised simply because other people do not wish to hear it? With the obvious caveats about direct incitement to violence? I agree wholeheartedly with your point elsewhere that it would be wrong, as in a Bateman cartoon, to challenge directly the fruitbats of this world. It would be impolite, and arguably impolitic. But the reaction in the cartoon of people looking askance and making their own minds up about the impropriety of the belief says it all. We do not need laws to do this. We need fact based education.
