Gravatar It does seem bloody silly to throw away a proven union that had many of its problems solved over its course of 300 years, while clinging to that miserably foolish union of 30 years standing, that Vichy-France-by-other-means. And as for Blair - he will surely be seen as one of our worst ever PMs.

Gravatar In another words, you don't want to belong to a tribe.

Gravatar I think you are understating your case here. Surely the basic case for republicanism isn't that you get to behead some inbreeds (fun though it may be). It is that you base your choice of a particular type of gevernment based upon what you want to achieve - not upon the power relations that you inherit.

We should expect political leaders to underline this perspective. This lot are more driven by trends and polls than by established principles of good governance.

Gravatar I meant to put the words "if anything" in the first sentence of the previous comment lest it should sound critical. Soz about that.

Gravatar While it is a shame that there are those within the SNP you are there for the creation of what they misguidedly think will be an ethnic Scottish state, and have based their policies on those of grievance - all the easons that make me a nationalist are precisely the same as the ones which make you a unionist.

I dont think Scotland ever really has been a homogenous ethnic unit, a basic knowledge of Scottish history would tell you that. Furthermore, for me, the idea of a Scottish state, able to fall back on thousands of years of its own civility is a far more attractive option that being one which is captured in a London orbit.
