Gravatar Most unfair, of course, but some names just strike me as silly. "Hilary" for example. Why on earth didn't he just change it when he went off to Uni?

Gravatar Album by Uriah Heep - very 'eavy, very 'umble.

Note that everyone (by which I mean the Today programme) is in a stushi because of a 6 week interregnum between Blair and Brown. We don't need to be governed every minute of the day. A 6 month interregnum would be fine by me.

Gravatar If you ask me (OK I know you didn't, I'm being rhetorical Mrs)there is far too much of it about - Government I mean.

Gravatar Thing about hilary benn and any candidate for post of deputy PM is that they need to try and reconnect labour to the voters, after the last years of Blairs govenment and leadership style thats sadly been eroded.

But he's had some very interesting stuff to say about why international development is much better method to tackle some of the wider problems of the world that the so called war on terror. Hes a good communicator and can grasp the complexity of policy with some actual human compassion, not something i ever felt about two jags!

Gravatar "The thing about hilary benn and any candidate for post of deputy PM is that they need to try and reconnect labour to the voters, after the last years of Blairs govenment and leadership style thats sadly been eroded."

1. The voters won't give a toss about the deputy leader - unless he was a complete liability.

2. Blair connects with voters better than either Brown or Cameron - even now. The challenge is therefore to connect Brown with voters despite his deficiencies and Cameron's better qualities.

Gravatar Never mind all this humility - cant and dishonesty! Consider that on Friday night - after another attempt - the MPs with the Government's connivance granted themselves exemption from the Freedom of Information Act.

If Brown is trying to "strive to earn your trust" he could no better than start a campaign in his capacity as an individual MP to have this dreadful bit of legislation repealed.

But, more likely, now we will never know just how much 'humility' these arrogant twats will show when running up expences, accepting hospitality, shady personal dealings etc. Any truth on these matters will have to be extracted from whatever self-appointed and self-regulated procedures that they have instituted.

It's a very arrogant 'humility' this 'humility' that they are all claiming.

Gravatar Transparency is the enemy of honest politicians.

Gravatar I suppose a degree of rhetorical self-effacement is predictable and maybe even desirable given cash-for-honours, the PM's unfortunate reluctance - until very, very recently - to acknowledge even the possibility of error on his part. But what's really amusing me about the dep. leader contest is the frantic bidding to prove personal credibility of one kind or another. I'm the most working class! No, I am! I'm the most female! No, I am! given this I feel a little sorry for Hilary who's the poshest by far and whose only obvious claim to femaleness is that unfortunate forename.

Gravatar Transparency is the enemy of honest politicians.

Probably the enemy of the Easter Bunny and the Tooth Fairy as well...
