Gravatar Bravo!

One addition. If you want to lose weight and keep putting it back on, work out why skinny fanny magnets, like Shuggy, don't. It is something called a genetic predisposition. We all fluctuate around a fairly narrow range of natural body weights. And there are plenty of academic studies to support it.

He is right about long term weight loss, I have done it, for around nine years. Restricting your calories is fine if you want to live in a food obsessed hell of self-denial, constantly feeling hungry. And it is not good for the health. However, it did make easier to get my leg over so keep going Shuggy, then let yourself go.

And while we are about it - the Mediterranean diet needs celebrating. Large amounts of salty foods, smothered in oil, loads of cheese, fatty meat, ultra sweet pastries, washed down with copious amounts of rough alcohol and accompanied by a packet of fags. Not what the diet gurus say it is? Sorry, they haven't spent much time there then.

Ha ha - keep saying it, Peter - perhaps it'll come true.

Yea and Amen to the Mediterranean diet. And the French. We should follow their example. Fast food? Nah, slow food. Mebbe that's why you don't see many corpulent Frenchies: to be overweight would require meal times that would take too much time even for them.

Gravatar Getting rid of oversize plates helps too. Get some smaller plates, and then have everything you like, just a smaller plateful. Buy fillet steak, but get the butcher to cut it into half-size portions. Good for your health, wealth, and waistline.

And walking is very pleasant exercise if you live in reasonable surroundings with access to coast or countryside. Buy a dog, then you have to keep to your daily routine, plus you gain a loyal friend who raises your spirits, and lowers your blood pressure.

I have read that the least healthy option for the big folk is to get locked into the vicious cycle of slimming down, then piling it all back on. Apparently you are better off staying big than doing that.

But most importantly I think we should not become obsessed with our weight unless it is making us poorly, or interfering with our enjoyment of active life.
