Gravatar Why not have an election? Because he might not win. Hmm.

imho it's a foregone conclusion that he would win. I mean, can you see Stuntman Dave winning? No, thought not.

So Brown's calculation really is why have an election. The only compelling reasons (apart from lengthening his term in office, of course) are (a) get it over with before the economy gets worse and (b) draw the sting from the Euro-referendum issue.

So for Broon it comes down to (a) does he believe real economic difficulty lies ahead, which he will be blamed for and (b) how can he dress up an Election win in such as way as to support his determination not to hold a referendum on the not-a-constitution. That is one election he would certainly lose, and it's becoming clearer by the day that he is totally determined not to take that risk.

He is waiting to see if the steam goes out of the referendum bandwagon; if it does - no election. If not, election resulting in "Look, everyone agrees we are great, therefore no referendum needed."

Expect some buried weasel words in their manifesto to post-justify that stance. Some warm horse manure about "remaining at the centre of Europe", etc etc.

Gravatar Yes, Labour will win whilst Cameron is in charge.

Gravatar Re: "The Labour Government has a mandate to govern that extends until the spring of 2010!”

Does it really?

Arguably it was elected on the basis of it’s manifesto. If it then fails to honour that manifesto then surely it is arguable it was elected under false pretenses?

I know Gordon Brown is trying to claim that they were talking about the rejected EU constitution when they promised a referendum, whilst the Constitutional ‘Treaty’ is only 99% identical, so doesn’t count - but this is effectively nit-picking.

If the Government will not allow the promised referendum then how can the Government be truly said to have any mandate, let alone Gordon Brown as PM, any mandate he may have can only be derived from the Governments’.

Gravatar Interesting - but could have been condensed to "democracy sucks", which some of us are belatedly coming to recognise
