Most readable account - I have been planning to visit Calcutta for ages - alas this has yet to materialize.
The Museum building that you visited is a stunning piece of architecture...
My grandfather[s] lived/studied there and it happens to be the oldest of cosmopolitan centres of the subcontinent.
thanks for taking me there alebit in the cyberspace!

And, there was another fascinating character from Calcutta - Gohar Jan - in the early twentieth century: an Armenian Jewish-Indian, singer par excellence who spoke seven languages (including French etc.).
These were amazing places..!

Thanks for a virtual trip of Calcutta, a city I've heard and read so much about. Your writing is remarkably vivid!

@Raza: I do hope that you'll be able to visit very soon.
There still is plenty of evidence of the city being among the oldest cosmopolitan centres in the region.
The pleasure, as they say, is all mine!
I've heard of Gohar Jaan, but am yet to find out more about her. I guess all I have to do for that, is to simply run a search on your blog!
@I Me My: Thanks for dropping by and for the compliments! I sincerely hope that you, too, shall be able to see the city for yourself, some time soon.
