Tell me about your mother....

All of these are public blogs with at least a small following, so i am not betraying anyone's confidence by sharing these. Perhaps anyone wanting to toss around the word rape should give a thorough read over these blogs, from start to finish, and then decide whether or not it is an appropriate word to use in this context.

Thank you MoM for your comments. They were appreciated by me.

Gravatar Thank you, square1- thank you, thank you. Enough said.

Gravatar ditto, Square 1.

Gravatar Square1,

You're the one to be thanked. It takes guts to write about it.

Gravatar I've had the inspiration and support of other women who are no longer content to speak out about it. They are in fact the brave ones. They are the one's seeking to be published and to have their voices heard... to announce that these travesties are real, and they are unnacceptable.
I'm am simply discarding memoirs into a specific place in order to compile a manuscript later. I still have much to work out for myself, memories that are unclear or don't seem to make sense in linear time, and new memories that surface as my children hit the ages that I was when the rape and abuse occurred. I've been writing about it since I was a child. That's nothing new to me. Sharing it however, is.

Gravatar That first sentence was supposed to be, "who are no longer content to keep silent about it" Aarrrggghhh! Damned emotions muddle up the thinking process sometimes.

Gravatar Square1, MaxedOutMama, and last but not least, SG&C, thanks.

Doesn’t sound like much, I know, but if you know me, even if just a little, you know the immense emotion contained in that single word.

Gravatar I understand that for some people there are words that can have only one meaning and can never be neutral and unemotional. But I am also a language junkie. It is hard to find a word in English that has only one specific meaning and I hate it when we lose a useful word because it upsets someone. On the other hand, some words are overused. Using a word in a certain way for the emotional impact of the word is a legitimate use of the word. But then, seeing its effectiveness, everybody starts using it that way and before long it loses its emotional impact for most people. When this happens we lose a useful word just as surely as if we were forced to quit using it entirely. Language should not be used so carelessly. Sensitive people, even understandably sensitive people, should be tolerant and learn not to take every use of a word personally. But we should all learn not to throw words around carelessly. Language is a treasure; treat it as one.

Gravatar So does that mean we should be able to use words like "fag" or "nigger" just because they don't only have one meaning, and because they are a useful words, with more than one meaning? I agree that language is a wonderful and brilliant form of expression. that is why I write. But it's also powerful, and we need to respect the power we wield with our words and it's effect on others.

Gravatar Lynn, as tolerant as I may be, there is no way I can NOT take the use of this word personally, or get sick when I see it used inappropriately.

Gravatar I ditto what Lynn said.

S1, for example 'fag' does have more than one meaning and is commonly used to mean 'cigarette.' Context is everything.

Do you propose we ban the teaching of Pope's 'The Rape of the Lock'? That's not even the metaphorical use of the word for effect — it's a different meaning, arguably from a linguistic standpoint at that point a different word altogether.

Gravatar Using the word fag to mean cigarette as opposed to a gay man, is a far cry from equating rape of a human to an action of equal import to flower or fauna.

Gravatar Consider it from the flower's point of view.
