Tell me about your mother....
|
|
I'm not entirely sure but I think I disagree. It's not a matter of the state forcing the husband to let her live; it's a dispute between the husband who is ready to move on and the woman's parents who are reluctant to let go. I think an important question would be, who's paying for it? The best thing to do would be to make the parents her legal guardians, to include the responsibility to pay for all her care themselves. Then if they still want to keep her alive, fine.

Lynn- the husband moving on has nothing to do with Terri Schiavo. He could divorce her- after all, he has already moved on, fathering 2 children.
Her parents have agreed to pay for her maintenance.
The issue is that Michael Schiavo will not relinquish his guardianship and still insists on pulling the plug.

Don't stop there. You are on to something SCA.
Health care is expensive.
Special Education is expensive.
Welfare is expensive.
In these tough economic times, we need to conserve.
Registration of anyone who is different or deficient or special or unemployable will be a GOOD thing. We can eliminate those people who are dragging our great country down...
As long as I get to choose who they are.

I am truly hoping you are being sarcastic? Even were I to think we had a right to terminate a human life, (aside from the death penalyt) I would think someone would be fighting for at least a less painful way to do it. Starvation and dehydration are not pretty.

One of my favorite pieces of writing. You do Swift quite an honor in your piece, Wise Men.
Still, this is such a touchy subject and I often feel very ambivalent. I would not want to be kept in such a state.(And I'm not talking about Florida, although I never wish to set up housekeeping there again) Yet, I've read that suicide victims often change their minds while they are commiting the act. Who's to say I wouldn't change mine, but be unable to share that?

I have said it before, and I will say it again :
While I support the 'right to die' for those who have proclaimed their decision and meet a very specific list of criteria. Terri fulfills neither of those criteria. Additionally, in Terri's case, under her circumstances, this would not be mercy. Rather, it would be outright murder.

Nat, I hear you.
However, sometimes it is less about the victim than it is about US. We are charged to be our brothers keepers- even when it isnt easy easy. That charge isnt necessarily a religious one- it is a moral one.
I am opposed to Capital Punishment- and I take a lot of flak for that. I oppose it because it can be too easily manipulated by an imperfect system. Further, the fact that it costs money to keep a person in prison is in no way a reason to execute him. As I said, being a 'brothers keeper' does not mean only when it is easy- or inexpensive.
The Schiavo matter is too tainted, too dirty and has far too many agendas to be easily disposed of.

I, too, am anti-capital punishment. When we, as a race, can commit such an ugly act and call it "justice," we have lost our dignity and anything that sets us higher than other animals.
Brother's Keeper is truly our most difficult role as human beings. Too many of us take it literally, holding our flesh and blood dear to us, but giving the finger to the rest of the world.

While we are at it...why not fertilyzer factories to recycle all the dead people we have on hand...
And ..um... think of all the money saved on social security if we have mandated entry in said fertilyzer facilities.
oh..wait...that's hitting a little close to home

And Lani? That's probably the most heartfelt and meaningful outcome we're likely to see from this sad story. The Schiavo family have been so very brave, for so very long. Their strength of will is an inspiration.

Hubby and I long ago set up living wills that are very detailed. In both of them, we stipulate that neither of us want to die starving to death. As much as I want to jump on the bandwagon on this controversery, I'm worried that the real issue is getting lost in the wave of upset... Terry's husband REFUSES to turn over guardianship to Terry's parents. That's the issue that needs to be dealt with. Her parents want to take care of her, and since he's moved on with his life, I don't see why a judge cannot step in and do the right thing there.

So grateful to see you doing an unfortunately controversial subject its due justice... Hope she gets the justice she deserves in this life and the rest of us see this through in holding those fueling this fiasco who need to be held accountable for their lies and criminal acts...held VERY VERY accountable...
As I said ...grateful grateful grateful...

Here's what I think.. and as ZeNeece, well, that means something, doesn't it?
I had a ferret that suddenly became dreadfully ill and almost died. A tumor seemed to grow on his pancreas overnight and he was basically starving to death. He was miserable. We got him medication which he had to get forced down his throat twice a day. He hated the stuff. He became an eating, pooping machine. All he did was wake up and have to eat and then poop. He couldn't play anymore. He became afraid of me because I was the horrible monster that had to make him take his medicine. He had no quality of life.
My husband and I came to the painful decision that it was time for Hobbes to go on to the Great Ferret Playground in the Sky. It was a very tough decision, but Hobbes got more and more frightened of me, and acted more and more miserable. It was horrible to see such a happy creature turn into something so unhappy.
Terry Shiavo is basically braindead. She's still human. But there's no

Regarding Terri being braindead, technically the answer is yes and no. Her autonomic functions still basically work, if I recall the case, but she can no longer feed herself and will never get better. She has no cognitive awareness, I believe.
Her parents are in Denial. She should have signed a living will. That's the real lesson to all of us.
