It was just a wee bit critical of my state, Mississippi, which I dearly love. I do not why Senators Lott and Cochran and 1/5 of the senate chose not to sign on with the apology.
41 years was too long to wait for Killen to go on trial. However, in 1994, Byron De La Beckwith was tried and comvicted for the murder of civil rights activist Medgar Evers.
Blacks, whites, and Native Americans are working together to ensure that justice is served.
Mississippi has changed so much from the 1960's. It is no longer burning with the hate and rage of racism.

Recently, I heard an interview with a couple of foreign reporters in Mississippi. They were far more critical of the u.s. as a whole than of that state specifically. In their experience (limited and mostly very current), the state seemed fairly integrated and mostly progressive--at least outwardly. The kind of state of mind that leads to waiting 42 yrs for anything is fairly well ingrained, though, so i expect more little skeletons to be found in that closet.
I suggest we as a nation concentrate on accentuating the possitives, and (though very imperfect) let's just say to mississippi (for the time being) way to go.

We agree, Miguel- but we have to be careful. Coming clean means getting out all the dirt.

Yes, seawitch. We did not mean to be critical of MS as a whole, but rather the elements for whom 40 plus years was appropriate.
We have a higher opinion of the vast majority of people in MS.
As for Lott and Cochran, as we said, we believe we are owed an explanation. Certain the citizens of MS are owed that much.
