It is, after all, the Old Testament that is the foundation for our beliefs and much of our value system.
Book recommend:
Gifts of the Jews
by Thomas Cahill
Not just a "foundation for our beliefs and much of our value system", but what enables humans to "Transcend the Animal". Using some of the imagery in that book, if it weren't for Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Moses, and the Torah, we would still be nothing more than animals, howling in rut on the steps of the ziggurat.

Same Ken as above.
I have been involved with anthropomorphics (fantasy fiction involving upright talking animal characters for grown-ups) for some time. A few years ago, on a panel for an SF convention, I coined the phrase "Transcending the Animal" to describe what I was shooting for in my take on the subject.
When I read Cahill (at random on the racks of a bookstore), a lot fell into place -- the message of God, from Torah to Christ, the idea of the imago dei, is that we are to Transcend the Animal. Whether we began as a creation that fell into the animal or evolved from the animal, we can be more than animals howling in rut, we are to be more than that. We are meant to Transcend the Animal.
