Tell me about your mother....

Gravatar The most damaging thing you can do to someone is give them an excuse for failure. It dismisses responsibility for what happens in life because now you have this excuse, all of your mistakes and shortcomings are the result of that.

I hate sports analogies but in this case I think it works. There is always this talk of overcoming adversity in order to win, but it's not the overcoming of it that's the important thing, it's the not allowing it to become the excuse for failure that matters.

Gravatar Well said. Guns, Germs and Steel is on my nightstand waiting for me to get to it. It is a few books away as of yet. i will keep this critique in mind while reading it.

Gravatar I have printed this out to read later but am glad that you chose this topic. Rose was given this book for Christmas and just what she read in the introduction was the fodder for several spirited dinner table discussions...she did not have a very favorable impression. It sounded as if Rousseau was raising his "noble savage" philosophy again through these authors.

Gravatar Thomas Sowell in "Race and Culture" does an incredible job on this topic. I haven't read Diamond, but it sounds as though Sowell should be read along side it.

With regard to India, I remember a report about the tsunami in which some of the young Indian elite were independently organizing private relief efforts. From their tone, they seemed so vibrant and take-charge and responsible. I still feel great when I remember this report.

Gravatar Hi there,

I just came across this blog and I think it's awesome. I'd like to know something about the creators of this website if possible.

Justin

Gravatar I'm reminded of the 40 year old who wants to blame the parents for all of the problems in life. Because there obviously hasn't been opportunity in the 22 later years to overcome the first 18. My response is a sympathetic "Drop a pair and get on with life."

Gravatar As always (well, all the ones I've read, which is not most but quite a few), your post starts of very thoughtfully and then fixates in an unhealthy way on Muslims.

I think, blaming the obvious and significant problems of core nations in the Muslim world on the religion of Islam is like blaming Nazism on the Germans eating too much sausage, or listening to too much Mozart -- too shallow to have any meaning. But even if you are right, why would you need to keep making the same point over and over again

You show glimpses of some really interesting ideas, you even seem to have some first hand knowledge of the Arab world, which I would have found very interesting, except you didn't seem to elaborate on it. At one point (for a week or so) I even bookmarked your site -- but you need to see a shrink about that Muslim obsession.
