Gravatar This is much the same as the outing issue. When a politician makes a politicizes the personal, as in assertions about the need for laws to protect "the sanctity of marriage," how can they possibly claim that the personal is not political in their own life?

Gravatar Why is it acceptable to discuss same-sex marriages and families in the abstract and unacceptable to examine heterosexual marriage?

Why are same sex couples held to a higher moral standard than the rest of the households in the country - especially when (according to another recent post at The Gist) the federal gov't won't even count how many of us exist?

Thank you LA Times. Hopefully the rest of the media will work up the courage to ask McCain himself why he is allowed to not live up to the tradition that is imposed on others.

Gravatar as is so often said, if one really wishes to defend the "sanctity" of marriage, then one must outlaw divorce and criminalize adultery. if one wishes to use biblical language out of context to slur gays, then one must equally denounce mcbush as an adulterer and a fornicator. have the mcbushes indulged in oral sex with each other? if so, they must be labeled as sodomites.

Gravatar With any presidential candidate, situtaions of obvious hypocrisy should most certainly be outed. He may be a war hero but these other reflections of his character are important to consider and I sincerely appreciate you letting us know.

Gravatar It just astounds me that anyone would be so ignorant as to claim, on principle that someones' "personal life", should not be a consideration in measuring someone's character, since in this case his being married to two people simultaniously appears to be (1)illegal:which is very public. (2) indeed he certainly was commiting adultery dating Cindy while he was married. So much for the "sanctity of marriage".

The overridding fact is that McCain demonstrated a degree of personal duplicity which I would not even respect in my cat.
This is a great indicator of how reliable his promises are. People like the Reagans take that sort of thing seriously, like mafia heads.
Women hold a special place as long as they stay there.

If Obama was using heroin regularly in his"personal life " you can bet that would be smeared all over. Look what happened to Clinton over a descrete blow job, during a "personal"moment. That not only made the news but got him crucified.

Republicans earn their stripes these days, by virtue of the degree of their corruption and lies however that only includes the taking of lives and making money for them and their friends. Like with any criminals their is honor among thieves. Imagine with the secrets that those wivescome to know, what would happen if they were betrayed and started talking?

Gravatar since mainstream media doesn't seem to have the guts to cover this we should all write a letter to our local editorial page. let's tell the public what only the la times seems to be brave enough to report.

Gravatar Thanks for posting this, Mike. Enjoy your vacation!

Gravatar I'm Canadian so maybe my opinion doesn't matter on this but I'll give it anyway.

The guy is the epitome of hypocrisy. His wife waits for him while he's MIA, then she gets into a car accident and he takes up with another woman and then applies for a marriage license while he's still married to his first wife?

This is VERY relevant if he's going to cast aspersions on the marriages of others, and comes out in "the sanctity of marriage".

People with the intestinal fortitude to call him on it have every right to do so. I only wish more people did.

Gravatar I also think it's a relevant story to cover. I don't hate McCain, but this shows he's being inconsistant (hypocritical?) with some of his arguments on the same-sex issues.

Gravatar In addition to all the other reasons noted, according to the strict Christian thinking of the religious right, divorce and remarriage are not allowed in the Bible. Certainly the Roman Catholic church still follows this stricture closely, but many evangelical/fundamentalist Christian churches also believe the same. In fact, when Tammy Faye left Jim Baaker and got remarried, her own children were appalled at the divorce, because they had been taught it was not allowed in good Christian families.

So, according to the religious beliefs of a large number of his supporters, John McCain is currently either an adulterer or a polygamist. In short he and Cindy Hensley (aka Cindy McCain) are living an "immoral lifestyle choice" that cannot be compared to a valid Christian marriage - AND they adopted a child while living in a state of sin.

I'd say that's pretty relevant when other "immoral lifestyle choices" are being barred from legal marriage rights.
