Wonderful news. And its gets better because it’s a precedent made even more powerful by the standing enjoyed by the California Supreme Court in legal circles. The courts and legislators are erratic and undependable at best but they’re also very political and when they’re faced with a mass movement that won’t take no for an answer they occasionally rule to placate the movement.
The justices of the California Supreme Court are almost entirely Republican appointees. So much for the argument that we have to vote Democratic (sic) to win in court. We just have to convince courts and lawmakers that we mean business. The big winners here are tens of thousands of California GLBT activists and their allies who fought long and hard for same sex marriage. We owe them all a debt of gratitude and a big hug.

We need to seriously get behind "equalityforall.com" and not only voice our support but provide monetary support as well. My partner (can't wait until I don't have to call him that...lol) have already donated 100.00 to the cause. I challenge all of to do the same. Let's keep the momentum on our side.
This is a HUGE step towards equality for everyone! I live in Mississippi so it will take many, many years for equaily to make it here...but it has to start somewhere and what a start! Massachusetts kicked it off for sure but now it's backed by a large state with a mostly republican apointed court...hard for the right to call them "activist" judges.
Rachel: you have to remember that there is a huge difference between what a "conservative ' judge was before and is now since Bush has been skliding all of these perverts into place.
Previously even"consevative" judges had an interest in preserving the laws and spirit in which they were written.
This group of yahoos just wants to rewrite the Constituion and put their own hateful spirit to what is
written.
We can only hope that we get Barak elected and put a different
torque to things.

I had to run out and missed Robin Tyler. But I understand in your last hour, that she was told not to sue and I liked your advice to the caller about immigration from Canada. Go for it, the way Robin did. And Gloria Allred, she makes those judges shit bullets, due to her influence in the media. Good for Robin, good for all individuals who make a stand and throw the pepple in the water making waves.

I hate to say this because I want the coalition to happen, but look over the list of www.equalityforall.com carefully. There may be some orgs on there that are not appropriate, like HRC and Log Cabin Republicans you don't want to support. Give big to the ones you know are going to make a difference.
MarriageEquality.org, ect.
I give to Williams Institute at UCLA in a big way, but they are not included in the coalition.
Guys who are actively leading protests like Wayne Besen of TruthWinsOut.org are the ones to support. (not on the list) The gay bureacratic orgs (HRC)want to work with the d.c. beltway system, and no changes will be made. Your donation will be just more dollars in the LGBT bureaucratic spin machine.
Mark, we won in California because the same sex marriage movement is huge and unrelenting and in spite of the pigheaded opposition of Obama, McCain and what’s her name, you know, the other one, the one who has hissy fits about race. Obama and the other two consistently pander to bigots. All three voted for this or that version of NAFTA and all three oppose the only real solution to the genocide in Iraq, which is total an immediate withdrawal from the Middle East and cutting the purse strings of zionist ethnic cleansing and apartheid.
So why do you think that Obama will appoint better judges than the other two? The California same sex marriage decision was decided by a majority ruling of three Republicans and the lone Democrat on the court. Chief Justice George, a Republican, was first appointed to the bench by Ronald Reagan in 1972. The first judicial appointment of Justice Moreno, the only Democrat, was by Gov. George Deukmejian, a rightist. Justice Kennard, a Republican, was also appointed by Deukmejian. Justice Werdegar is a Republican.
Bill Clinton, the man behind bigot laws like DOMA and DADT appointed Karen Nelson Moore to the US Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals in 1995. Moore consistently votes for the rights of christianists to oppress GLBT folk. Senate Democrats led by Feinstein of California worked with Republicans to approve gaybashing Bush nominees for the US 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and as US Attorney General.
What that proves is that some Republican judges get better and some Democratic judges are no good. The best way to influence the courts and the congress is to continuously expand struggle for full equality and not deflect our energy into election snake oil sellers and backstabbers.

I was lowering my expectations before the decision was released. I didn't want to get let down again. Anyway, I was really happy when they made their decision. The battle is not over yet. Voters will likely have a chance to vote on the issue in November. We have to make sure they don't vote for a ban or else we will have to start over.
