You're right about dissatisfaction with the congress, altough that is unrelated to Obama. Any dissatiafaction with the Democratic congress(not sure where those figures come from) is directy related to the their not having played their Condstitutional role in standing up to the dictatorial demands of Bush.
There is certainly nothing in the history of the U.S. which has inspired more disgust and overall confusion than the entire Iraq fiasco. While there is in fact a colusion of monstrously greedy and deceptive people behind Bush's actions: people who have stood to make hundreds of billions of dollars in profiteering from this war(e.g. Halburton, Bechtel, Blackwater etc. etc.) :most of his staff: Cheney, Rumsfeld, Perle, they have acted as though they were secondhand players. Bush is after all the person who, stupid as he really is, played the role of the mastermind of this human disaster: from the time that the Congress turned over thier powers to make war to him.
His primary weapon has always been that of inspiring fear in people, even though it was fear of the wrong people, for the wrong reasons. His summons was not new. Americans have pretty supidly bowed to his claims and allowed him to continue this war even though it has long since been proven to be based on concious deception.
The issue became confusing by the time that he was reelected in 2004, because American people took responsability. By that time he had destroyed the oldest cite of western civilization and killed and tortured millions of innocent people The united States has moved from being a beacon of liberty to the worlds bully and torturer.
Since irrational fear which has been fostered and festering in peoples blood for years now, and the reasons for fear have become more pronounced because there are thousands more people who we have given reason to despise the U.S. , the situation is worse. I think that people, as ignorant as they often are begin to see that something is pretty imbalanced about a war that has taken longer and cost more than WW2, and nener improves. The fact is that the real motivation for the war is the profits of war in themselves to the people running it. That may be had to present clearly, without the media.
But It will be hard for McCain to detach from the whole group of neocons. who have run the party and country into this dire situation. While it is just beginning, I don't see how McCain can detach from the Bush league, who have been running the country broke. Hopefully the whole picture becomes clear enough to people .
So much deception has come about and persistes.
This has just started, and hopefully Obama can give his attention to this making things sufficiently clear. It is a rare situation that a exiting president has to be distanced from and that the ongong issue are what are at hand. McCain may just hope to embelish the original lies and situations. & a lot of harm has been done by the Democratic infighting.

The Pentagon is planning to add to our current 30 torture-detention facilities in Afganastan a new HUGE Long term GITMO like prison only 3 times bigger than Guantanamo. Along with this of course we have dozebns of rendition(torture) facilities all over the world; 25 in Iraq. This will have room for 670 prisoners facilitated by Afgan guards. Guantanamo is an embarasment. The Red Cross reported that a section of about 1/3 of the prisoners had been electrocuted so many times that they were basket cases.
Also in the Times -good. Ali al-Naimi the Saudi Oil Minister told Bush to take a hike when he asked for more oil to be pumped. Ali said that they were pumping more as of May 10 for their American customers, but not for Bush.

David: I know that a number of people have likened Obama to JFK relative especially to his ability to inspire people in way that no one else has. That's pretty accurate. I see a paralell in his having come from a marginalized group and being young and bright.
Recall that there was a similar suspicion in the electability of someone from Irish Catholic roots, and a Black person. I wasn't old enough to know what was going on with JFK except that my dad was always really fond of him because we were Irish and they had a racial struggle with that here in the midwest. I saw a movie where JFK was even discouraged from visiting the place of his predecessors home. Obama did visit his fathers home in Africa.
Gore Vidal, it seems would be a pretty good commentator about the spirit of that time. Of course the politics have swung far to the right since then, but I think also, like JFK Obama has compassion for the poor, and will be less of a bully and more of a world diplomate.

The truth is that with the decline of the dot coms as a form of financial exploitation, it had become clear at the beginning of this century that corporations needed a new source of revenue.Who has the money? The U.S. government. How to get it? Start a war and exploit it for privateering. IRAQ.
Even at the beginning of the war, Bush insiders were starting companies and implementing munitions and ammunition factories. Then instead of putting any of the U.S departments to work restoring Iraq, they hired Bechtel, Halburton, and dozens of other private companies which mainly by fraud have taken over the projecyt of rebuilding: nothing of which has happened. Blackwater is just another private army. The U.S. spends $259-375 billion dollars/yr to fund all of the private contrator companies in the war. Rumsfeld was so heavily invested in these companies that he refused to get rid of all theis stock because he claimed that it would cost too much to account for. Cheny makes millions of dollars every year. The people who leave the administration just go into private war related companies.
