A couple of Saturday's ago I was out shopping early and had to avoid 3 separate businesses because they had \"Cub Scout\" troops out front selling popcorn. I contacted all 3 businesses' national headquarters and got similar responses but did have some very interesting conversations with 2 of them. I explained that based on the Boys Scouts (Cub Scouts is a part of it) attitude towards gays that I felt for them to have them out front was a sign of bigotry and hatred that they supported.

One was Ace Hardware. A really nice man from the National HR department contacted me and spent a good deal of time on the phone with me. He explained how each store is independently owned and operated and that my particular store was owned by a former Eagle Scout. He said they didn't have a national standard on employee policies and didn't have one either on policies about groups \"out in front of the business\" selling thier wares. He hoped I would continue to support my local Ace but actually seem to understand that I didn't feel I could.

I have yet to get a response from Lowes but had a chat with the Manager on duty that morning. She said she didn't see how those boys out front could be hurting anyone. When I explained it's not them it's how they are \"taught\" and the examples they follow when they get older and find out it's okay to discrimate against gays. I also asked the manager how she would feel if she learned one of those boys later in life realized he was gay but had grown up in an environment that was so \"gay\" intolerant. I explained it's hard enough to deal with your gay feelings and come out of the closet. I also said I wondered how many teenage suicides are the result of gays who can't deal with those feelings based on what they learned in groups such as the Boys Scouts. The manager just laughed at me... needless to say I didn't buy anything that day and evidently will be dropping both Ace and Lowes from my list of stores I shop at.

The only positive response I got was from Publix supermarkets. I had a discussion with the store manager and got a call from a VP for the district and he mentioned how my letter caused them to discuss it at the regional managers meeting. He was the only one that explained that they had many gay employees and his only concern with any employee is whether or not they can do thier job and do it well. I know my local store has had several gay employees over the last 25 years I have shopped at that store. He was very apologetic and they are planning on moving any groups off to the side of the store instead of right at the entrance. They were the only ones that didn't want me to take my business elsewhere. The VP also mentioned how he knew the world was changing and he hoped that groups like the Boys Scouts would change with it... I told him I had little hope of that. He did say that this issue wasn't over and that it would continue to be discussed because they weren'
