Your second comment reminded me of a quote from last week's New Yorker. The article was talking about the swimmers who won silver and bronze in the races against Michael Phelps, and said: "It's the old Ben Johnson problem: you're a fine playwright, and at any other time you'd be the best, but by lousy luck you happen to overlap with Shakespeare, who takes gold in every medley in town."
Also, in response to your third comment, I found a source (through Wikipedia, of all places) that said he could have finished in 9.52 seconds. The quote is: "Bolt's trainer, Glen Mills, was confident that his protege had not yet come close to his potential in the 100 metres. "I haven't seen the complete biomechanical report from Beijing yet," he admitted, "but I can say that Usain had a good start by his own standard. His first 60 metres were very good. I was told that with an all-out finish after the opening 60, Usain was projected to run a 9.52" and is from this article: http://www.weltklassezuerich.ch/
