I think you point out an interesting dichotomy between the idea of marriage and the practice of such a union. The LGBT community is spending so many resources on getting something called marriage, that I don't think enough people have questioned whether what we really want is something that is equivalent in practice, even if it is called something else. What does it mean to possess a marriage certificate if you remain unequal in the rights afforded to you upon its receipt?
